  1. Curious what kind of participation are y’all getting. Did all your varsity runners come out? Did some parents say no? Is your team size limited?

  2. A huge thank you to Chris Williams, his assistant coaches, volunteers, AD, and athletes for putting on a safe and exciting multi-school cross country meet. To anyone that has ever attended the Dublin Distance Fiesta, it is no surprise that Coach Williams is an organizational superhero; overcoming pandemic obstacles to create a fun event that celebrates running. It was a a great day of cross country!

  3. I know my team has lower numbers this current season and I am assuming every other team is experiencing the same.

  4. Covering small meets the last three weekends, every coach I have talked to has mentioned lower numbers, tougher time getting athletes to commit to training, etc. But with that said, every runner I have spoken to has been overjoyed at the opportunity to run with their teammates and compete against opponents. Hats off to coaches, administrators, parents, volunteers and student athletes that are making it happen. Was good to see two of the top NorCal teams (that aren't Bellarmine) and three of the top seniors go toe to toe at Jesuit. Ajani Salcido pulled away from De La Salle's Patric Curulla and his Jesuit teammate Michael Chambers over the second half of the race to take the win. In the team competition Jesuit overcame the absence of their top returner from state, Spencer Pickren to squeeze out a one point win over a deep De La Salle squad, powered by the one-two finish of Salcido and Chambers.

  5. We have had 2 dual meets this year. Our girls varsity team has 4 runners. We did not have a team score our first race, but in the second race the other girls varsity team only had 3 runners. So the coaches just scored the first 3 runners. Everyone is adapting and making the most.

They are trying to do a league champs at the end of all the duals, but my coach is not confident of a meet that size.

  6. In the SCVAL we usually have 1100ish athletes for 14 schools, this year we have 504. First meet is this Sat and we're all excited to race.

  7. Hank, Great to see the SCVAL racing again, and seems like a lot of thought and energy has been put into it. It looks like SCVAL is doing a series of dual and tri meets on the same day with wave starts. Waves will have runners from different schools, like #1 runners, then #2 runners, etc. Is that right? Can I also ask what is the mask policy? Kudos to the SCVAL for getting the season going! Also, sorry to see that Saratoga opted out, and hope that was a team decision and not a school admin decision.

  8. Hank, are you running all 13 teams at the same time or are they actually running duals spaced out over the day? Are divisions separated or running together?

    ReplyDelete
  9. How is everyone handling, logistics> Travel to and from meets, physicals etc.? Are your Ad and school admin helping the coaches out?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Posting for a friend, but their AD told them that since CCS has started all seasons in January that athletes in Santa Clara county can not be in two cohorts (teams). So if they run a XC race that’s their sport.

Any real clarification from officials on this? I need hard proof, not opinions XC kids can run track.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Hank...are boys/girls from schools running together or separate in your dual meet waves?

    ReplyDelete
  12. After March 27, all XC athletes can begin to compete in another sport. Pods are allowed to be reformed after three weeks, within the season itself--as long as no one tests positive or is exposed during the three weeks--so students coming from XC could join one pod of 'just finished XC tracksters' and then transition in to other pods as time elapsed. That is what we are doing at Bellarmine, and it is all by the rules...students can absolutely, definitively, do both XC and track.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Thanks Patrick. Do you by chance have a link to those rules? I’d like to forward to my friend who coaches so he can show his AD. Thank you!!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Just curious do any of the athletes have to be tested?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Getting the feeling people don’t want to say what they’re doing. Best keep it on the down low so there’s no backlash.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I am not sure what you are looking for here. We are only having dual meets and all participants have to be tested in order to compete.

If anybody is out there trying to skirt the rules right now, they shouldn't be coaching and/or working with. young adults.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Not Patrick, but two items:
    1) CIF rule 600 update: https://cifstate.org/covid-19/2.12.21_update_re_600
    2) XC and Track are season 1 and season 2 respectively, using the CIF scheduling plan for the year. There is no restriction on athletes, once their season 1 sport is done, on participating on a season 2 sport team. Other districts/leagues may have different sports/seasons this year, but don't see any prohibition on concurrent sports from CIF, particularly in light of 1 above.

  18. No saying any rules are being broken...But questions about links to the rules regard two sports allowed at the same time, do they wear masks while racing, are all 13 schools racing at the same time go unanswered. No rules being broken but by not publicizing the logistics can save some complaints. For example WCAL plans to compete at HMB in team time trials. But is that honoring the spirit of the rule only competing in your county or neighboring county? No rule is technically being broken but schools in non neighboring counties are running the same course on the same day. Just wondering how other leagues are doing it. Mass starts or wave starts? Divisions? Masks? What you all doing?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hopefully, all coaches are following what their administration is directing them to do who in turn are following county guidelines.

    ReplyDelete
  20. @10:50.

    1. CCS moved all sports into season 1. Per the CCS commissioner you can only do one sport.
    2. Santa Clara is more restrictive. They are not allowing two cohorts simultaneously.

I’m looking for guidelines from CCS or Santa Clara County stating an athlete can change cohorts within the same season (as in CCS). Just because one finishes before the other doesn’t matter as both started at the same time. Or so I’m told. I’m looking for official county guidelines that state otherwise.

    ReplyDelete
  21. @11:13am. The WCAL is following both the letter and spirit of the rules. The WCAL is dividing the league into two divisions so that teams are only competing against other teams from within the same county or an adjacent county. There is no overlap between the two divisions and they won't be at the course at the same time.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Team from San Francisco races at 9 am. Team from Santa Clara at 9:30 am? Or you talking a Saturday & Sunday?

    ReplyDelete
  23. #3:41pm. One division races in the morning and another in the afternoon. No physical overlap whatsoever and separated by several hours. Facility will be cleared after the morning session. You seem to be wanting to find something wrong with it but that approach is pristine.

    ReplyDelete
  24. For the record the WCAL has not been approved to compete in San Mateo County at this time so it may not happen. Hopefully get an answer soon. I am not sure if the HMB school district approved the rental of the site yet but assuming so.

  25. I just posted info this morning on lynbrooksports.com that gives meet info/requirements which should answer lots of questions. Meet/wave time schedule is also there so you can see how we're spreadout. Duals or tris allowed in our league (every league is different). No more than 20 athletes in a wave, going every 3 minutes. Gender is ignored for running off race, base waves on pace or co-horts (teams decide this as they feel is best for their athletes). Computer will score everything (division, duals, and a host of other what-ifs) at the end of the day
This way all schools run same course on same day so they can compare but done as 5 separate dual meets and 1 tri with 20-30 minutes of spacing in between each dual (custodial staff will clean restrooms between each dual, they'll be busy).

    hank

  26. Technology makes it pretty easy to run meets. I'd love it if our league had decided to run the meets with everyone in waves by time and let the computer sort the divisions etc.

  27. Fun competition today at DLS between DLS, Monte Vista & DVHS. https://www.athletic.net/CrossCountry/meet/188642/results

Really strong performances from Curulla and Switzer

  28. Whoa. Quite the run from the MV kid clinging to Patrick Curulla for 3 miles. Those are strong times. Does anyone know what that course was like? Is there video somewhere?

  29. Do any Counties / leagues require athletes to wear masks during races? We in the MCAL are trying to get our County Health Dept to drop this requirement. Football not required to wear masks during games, but cross country might required to during races. Hopefully they will make the right call on this one.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Santa Clara County requires masks. For all sports, including football.
If you read the state guidelines it also says to wear masks even when competing but coaches have taken liberties with the phase on one line (when possible).

    ReplyDelete
  31. The De La Salle meet was a multi looper inside their campus - flat fast course

    ReplyDelete
  32. CIF modified sport guidelines say masks not required during competition for XC and T&F.

    ReplyDelete
  33. BVAL, in Santa Clara, is requiring masks at all times during practices and racing. The ruling was that the County rules outweigh the broader CIF guidelines. We also need to wait to compete for two weeks from the official start date of the season (not sure on the reasoning here but it is a league rule). We are happy to be allowed to race.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I don’t know who needs to hear this but if your county or school district has stricter standards you have to go by those. CIF doesn’t supersede a county health department.

  35. So weird situation. A kid was feeling fine & had no symptoms in screen check. Parents were home sick most of the week but started to see better day of the race. Then parents tested positive for covid a day later. Kid has thrown up a few times but no other symptoms & feeling better. Everyone is feeling better from that family. What now?

    ReplyDelete
  36. That kid gets tested again and should be nowhere near any of his teammates at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  37. If the athlete competed already and has been around the team who needs to be notified?

    ReplyDelete
  38. San Mateo now red tier!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Definitely pays to not test as much. So do you start your 2 week window or Dow you move tiers automatically now?

  40. Dublin 4-way this Saturday has Bellarmine racing, looking forward to seeing the results. An actual XC meet without having to deal with waves, should be good.

    Hank

  41. Did WCAL meet at HMB this Saturday not get approved by the county?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Bad news. Despite the WCAL proposal being pristine the San Mateo County denied the meet. Hoping it get approved for 2/27.

  43. I would love to get these results added to the article.

  44. So all these CA kids running track races in Arizona. They are stuck in clubs running out of state or what? Per youth guidelines you can only compete in your county or neighboring county. What’s up with that?

  45. results from Dublin High School today. A HUGE shout out to Chris Williams and all his staff and volunteers for a safe fun and exciting event. Windy and cold and beautiful out there in the shadow of Mt. Diablo...well done by all! Results can be found at:

  46. You can compete out of state unattached.

    ReplyDelete
  47. The comment above is not true. Competition out of state is not allowed but what are you going to do? The current push is to open... no one is going to do anything.

    Rules posted below.

Inter-team competitions, meets, races, or similar events are permitted to occur only if (a) both teams are located in the same county and the sport is authorized in the Tables below; or (b) teams are located in immediately bordering counties and the sport is authorized in both counties in the Tables below.
The county-based authorizations outlined in the Table below apply to the locations/counties in which the teams, schools, clubs, leagues, and similar organizations are functionally based (e.g., where the players reside, where facilities are located, etc.).
Local Health Departments to be notified of any cross county competitions within their jurisdiction and reserve the right under their own discretion to deny the competition at any time in their jurisdiction. Teams participating in cross county competitions will follow the more stringent rules if the participating teams are coming from counties that may be at different case rate thresholds.

  49. Top programs don't win National titles or pump out D1 studs by following some arbitrary guidelines intended for the masses. Why start now?

  50. On the California Dept of Public Health page. It is not restricted to high school only.

  51. LOTS of CA high schoolers ran in Arizona this weekend.

  52. COVID-19 continues to pose a severe risk to communities and requires all people in California to follow recommended precautions. This guidance provides direction on outdoor and indoor youth and recreational adult sports activities to support a safe environment for these sports. The guidance applies to all organized youth sports and recreation— including school- and community-sponsored programs, and privately-organized clubs and leagues — and adult recreational sports (hereafter youth and adult sports). This guidance does not apply to collegiate or professional sports. Additionally, this guidance does not apply to community events, such as marathons, half-marathons, and endurance races.

Again this is for in California and doesn't affect community event such as endurance races. If you hold a open track race that is open to individuals in Arizona, this has absolutely no baring on an individual showing up and attending.

    ReplyDelete
  53. So did the run an endurance event like a half marathon or marathon or did the run a HS 3200? Not saying kids shouldn’t be able to race (I think they should) but come on...

    ReplyDelete
  54. The youth guidelines were created to stop the spread of COVID with the intention of eliminating out of state competition and travel out of county. As someone who knows people who passed of this disease I wish people would adhere to guidelines such as hand washing, masks, social distancing and eliminating non essential travel.
