Craig over Saul? Hsu over Wilson? Scales over Wilson, Saul, and Lavarato? Some of these don't make sense.

  2. How the heck did Scales rank so high? How can you put Sam Craig over Henry Saul? Ryan Wilson may not have beat Hsu at CCS however, he surely deserves to be above him if we take the entire season into account. Henry Saul ran faster than Scales almost this entire season. I'm so confused by these choices.

  3. We deliberated quite a bit on many names including the boys you mentioned. It was very difficult to narrow it down to the list that you see attached. We compared every result and how well runners raced in the most important back-end races of the season. Feel free to name your own teams and please don't forget to justify who you picked and why.

  4. While both had great freshman year and deserve recognition, I would have placed Layla Ruiz from Watsonville for frosh of year over Lucy Lambert. 18:36 for Ruiz and 19:05 for Lambert at State. Ruiz 2nd at Footlocker. Will be fun to watch these two wonderful athletes develop in coming years.

  5. I am not going to get into specifics because these are high school students after all. However, we all looked at the entire season for each runner. We weighted the last three races (league, CCS and state) above the other races. I understand we are not all going to agree on what runners get placed where but that is what you get when you have a voting process.

  6. The decision for the girls awards must have been difficult as the finishing order seemed to vary quite a lot from race to race. Agree that Ruiz and Lambert were close and will be fun to watch for the next three years. Naomi Donovan must have been close for Junior of the year and making the first team. She won CCS Div 1, top Junior at CCS and CIF (7th overall CCS, 6th at CIF). Hmmmm?

  7. Let's be clear about the goal - race at States and beyond. This voted list is a hodge podge. Just let the CCS, States, NXN, Footlocker results speak for themselves. If your goal is to peak at States and beyond, you'll need a strategy to qualify thru league and sectionals without risking injury or peaking too soon. I think the Walt ranking method of mixing together all the data looks comprehensive but there's too much emphasis on Crystal times. XC races are not time trials, the top runners race for placement not time (there are exceptions). I also think there should be more emphasis on Teams not individuals if CCS wants to become a bigger player at States.

How many states compete at “states”? Asking for a friend.
