  1. St Francis boys new Toro Park record! Mari Friedman Santa Cruz, #5 all time! Woah!

  2. Thanks Gus. That's some great racing for both St. Francis and Mari Friedman this early in the season. Very exciting.

  3. This is a bit misleading...this is a school record for St Francis, right? I read it as saying St Francis had set a course record, but St Francis and Bellarmine team times were much faster last year I think.

  4. Garrett, Caroline 11:46, who saw that coming?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Nobody raced on Toro Park last year.

  6. I'm glad to see they are utilizing Toro Park again, Great History! Plus great racing out of Mari and the Santa Cruz girls also. How was the weather Albert?

    ReplyDelete
  7. She ran 5:05 and 10:56 during track.

  8. Wow that is a crazy level of dominance by Dublin...

  9. Looks like SF did get the all time team record at Toro of 79:30. Only the second team time under 80:00 in Toro history. Previous record was Carlmont 79:58 in 2012. Bell ran 80:09 in 2015. I think SF is a sleeper team this year. You heard it here first!

  10. Ah, re St Francis at Toro, my mistake. Athletic.net shows the CCS XC finals results from last year as being at Toro Park, but of course that race was moved. So I was looking at Crystal times but it showed Toro. Impressive then!

  11. I think Granada and Palos Verdes broke the team course record in GGP for Lowell on both the VB and VG side. At least the fastest in the last 10 years minus the short course in 2009. Also looked like Dublin set a team time record at Ed Sias. Can anyone verify these as meet records?

  12. carlmont also had a surprisingly good performance. I did not expect them to perform as well as they did at Lowell.

  14. The course was a bit short (heard 2.8 unofficially) since the runners didn't go around the big tree which was similar to the 2009 course. It fluctuates from year to year but obviously fast times still for both teams.

  15. Carlmont has over 2100 students with a pretty good feeder school. Wilson ran 1:52.92 and made the state finals in the 800.

  16. I believe the official team time is 79:31 if you round up all the times that should be rounded up. Northern California has two very good teams in Division II this year with St. Francis and Dublin.

  17. Chieftan uses a shorter course than Earlybird and CCS, so no 'records' from Chieftan can count towards all-time records...

    1. Haha Patrick!! You almost made me lose my breakfast laughing! Looking forward to Saturday and an assault on the fresh record! :)

  18. That's the first time I have ever heard Chieftain using a shorter course.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Does anyone know if the start/finish lines were adjusted at lowell to make up for not going around the tree? If not then how much shorter could the course possibly have been?

    ReplyDelete
  20. How? If its the same set up as ccs and other races at Toro. Great job St. Francis!

    1. Haha! Palma is known for cutting corners ;) haha

    2. Apparently we are now!

  21. Did bellarmine sit out runner and/or split runners between A and B teams?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Adding to Mari Friedman's impressive run was fact that 3 of her Santa Cruz HS team mates were all within the top 5.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Santa Cruz has been very good and it looks like they added a pretty good freshman girl. They will be favored to win CCS and do some real damage at state.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I believe the finish at Lowell was adjusted to make up for the (slight) cutoff around the tree.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The reason why I said that is because when we were repairing the Toro course back in August, people familiar with the various courses used for all the meets at Toro informed that the Chieftan course is shorter because it doesn't go as far as the CCS course does towards the turn before the mile mark...it is not unusual for courses to be different between meets that use the same course; eg, I am sure the course WCAL uses at Baylands Sunnyvale is different than the course used by SCVAL.

    1. True...there are slight little things based on flagging and chalking... I think the turn you mentioned is extremely minimal at best... There isn't much room there to cut any time off the course... Also, some meets have now turned a bit on the home stretch and go around the last tree on the right instead of the left side... For Earlybird we keep it on the right side due to size of crowds needing more space along the finish area while we prep the next race... Anyway, in the end the slight changes are very minimal and props to all the kids and teams regardless of the slight changes... Oh, we may have to change the start area a little this year due to the new box there plus large fields.. may go to three different start lines to spread kids out as much as possible early...

      Delete
  26. the turn around was not cut at all. Kids were about 15-20 meters or so farther out from the last tree on the right so theres no way it was shorter.

  27. Plus the coaches who set up the course for CCS at toro helped me with it

    ReplyDelete
  28. aww shhhh don't worry Coach McCrystle... It's okay... I know... don't worry, everything will be okay

    ReplyDelete
  29. Dublin's team time at Ed Sias is tied for 1st all time with the 2008 Petaluma boys team.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Where were Eric Eng and Juan Pablo Garcia last season?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Eng was a first year XC runner last year as a Soph and Garcia was a frosh whose best Crystal time last year was 17:37. Goes to show that you don't have to be a big MS talent or hot shot frosh to make an impact on a highly rated team. You have got to LOVE our sport!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Did they have good track seasons? Because these two are pretty new names.. maybe just for me. But good for the Lancers!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Eng 4:32/10:01. Garcia 4:28/9:50.

  34. Lost in the back and forth of the course layout discussion (which is interesting because many minor variations over time can impact records) is the fact that St. Francis broke the former record by :27 at the beginning of the season. No minor changes could explain that away. While we all have our favorites and rooting interests, we should acknowledge our NorCal teams for special achievements. That being said, I could envision the record being broken again next week and then again at CCS. Let's hope all our teams stay healthy all the way to Fresno so we can bring home some hardware.

    1. That is an amazing result. Imagine if vista del Lago frosh Anna Vogtmann had made a last decision to not go to vista and went with her first choice, St Francis.

    2. Just do it, best team money can buy. Why try to make a team with Vista, go SF!! Sydney and Izzy would love to have her.

  35. I mentioned this already above but with Dublin and St. Francis, you have two of the better teams in state in Division 2. For all sections outside the Southern Section, Division 2 is usually the toughest division because the teams that should be in Division 2 are usually in Division 1 and the team that end up in Division 2 are usually going against much larger schools at the state meet.

I wish both teams well. Let's get some hardware in Division 2!

    ReplyDelete
  36. How about a little love for the Granada varsity boys team (also Div 2) who won Lowell over Bellermine (even with combined best 5 times) and an excellent Palo Verdes team. Note, the top 5 Granada runners averaged a blazing 14:50, which we believe is a team record for this race.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Granada varsity Boys need some attention, at Lowell their top 5 averaged a blazing 14:50 owe believe a record), while beating Palos Verdes and Bellermine (even combining split team times).

    ReplyDelete
  38. Was Bellarmine's collapse strategic and a warmup for this weekend or is it something to be concerned about?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Granada is also a very good division II team and I think they are a top 10 team in the state right now.

    ReplyDelete
  40. People have to remember that it's tougher to break Team Records in EarlyBird since teams are the same grade level so some varsity teams might be broken up...unless they do it by adding all the top 5 per school's times...makes sense? CCS won't surprise me if records fall (since it's true varsity teams plus end of the season peak), but again CONGRATS to St. FRANCIS BOYS! Definitely gotta give them props for the HUGE PERFORMANCE!

    Best wishes this Season!

    1. We do add up the times at Earlybird. I know some folks don't like it since some kids don't go head to head or run together with their team but I actually think it's a disadvantage for that very reason making Earlybird team times very impressive. Anyway, take the Toro records with a grain a salt for those reasons... Maybe I will add meet info to our top team marks since I'm the one keeping tabs on those anyway...haha! Congrats to St Francis on their fine run by the way! Their team wasn't even in the top 10 all time before jumping up to #1!

  41. Jorge, interesting point about the Earlybird course records. One could argue that aggregating the best 5 times from all runners over 4 races could be an unfair advantage over taking the best 5 times from 7 starters in one race. Seems like it's still fair to count EB times as a course record. Gus, can you clarify?

@9:52 which team and what money.

    1. Check my reply above... I maintain my own Toro Park record list as part of Earlybird and surely include Earlybird team times on there... Not sure if anyone else is keeping a list of Toro times anymore...on that note, it would be great to start a record board like Crystal springs has...

  42. Hey Coach Gus, sounds logical enough and whether it's fair or not, this is a good thing to debate about since it shows how strong our section and NorCal is as predicted from Track Season! Can't wait for these kids to race at State and post season races such as NXN and FL! And yes a board of records is a must!!! Do it!!! (Peer pressure) :)
