Hopefully BV has figured out a way to run the Bronco without overlapping racers on the dam. The past couple years have had many collisions that have made the course unsafe at this point of the course. With the rain and race overlap on the dam, it is a recipe for disaster. Run safe everyone, it is too close to champs to get hurt.
ReplyDeleteThere are at least 25 minutes between the start times of every race, so any issues should be easily handled by experienced course marshals. I have been there for just about every meet the past 4 years and have never seen any collisions on the levee. The only issue I see are from spectators trying to get back and forth across the levee during races. I have seen a couple of racers have to dodge spectators staring in to their cell phones, but that's it. If course marshals are diligent there should be no issues.
ReplyDeleteHopefully they are not the same "experienced" course marshals as last year when they tried to recover from a couple of earlier restarts, and tried to stay on schedule. They started a couple of races and by the time they reached the levee there were still runners coming the other way from the previous race. They had to avoid oncoming runners on a narrow levee. That was definitely a train wreck and hopefully there is better communication and timing this year.
ReplyDeleteThis invite gets a good number of teams attending, because its the last race some teams have on it before section finals. Either have more races to avoid these collisions or be more restrictive on who you let in.
The reason Willow Hills course is the section final (and not subsections) is because only 10 teams qualify from subsections, and it doesn't handle large number of teams very well.
Looking forward to how BV boys do on Saturday against the D1 schools. Rebuilding year for the BV girls but also looking forward to see them.

ReplyDeleteLast year, we did not have our usual volunteer training session, which was a mistake, and we did have some starting and timing issues. We've held a training session this year, plus we will have chip timing. We hope things will go more smoothly. We always welcome input regarding how we can improve our meet. For example, you could be right that we may need to adjust the number of races or put more limits on entries. We have been discussing this, and we shall see how it goes.
The meet will showcase some top talent. It should be a lot of fun to watch!

Selena, thanks for all the hard work. This is all for the kids and without the work of parents and other volunteers none of these big meets would be possible. Glad to know that everyone is reviewing past meets and trying to make things better in the future.

ReplyDeleteMariner results are live on adkinstrakwest. Should be up on athletic.net soon. Course looks fast once again with charvet of heritage (15:21) running the fastest boys and time and rylee (17:17) and her sister Kate (17:51) both breaking 18.
ReplyDeleteI have been told that the Hayward course used for the Mariner meet was changed and is shorter than the one that has been used for the NCS finals. Can anyone tell me if this will be true for this years NCS meet and all the meet records need to be tossed?

I don't believe Hayward is shorter, but it is faster because the runners don't go down to the track at all anymore (versus twice on the former course). This takes away two minor hills. Instead, the runners run the Menendez loop after the 2 mile mark on the basketball courts.
ReplyDeleteThe Hayward course is different this year due to construction on the track area. The course is faster than the previous version. My best guess is somewhere between 10-20 seconds faster.

ReplyDeleteNo you don't throw those records away. More than likely, this is a temporary year with the altered course. Either way, you still keep those records.

ReplyDelete2 of Jesuit's top 7 from Stanford didn't run and one of the replacements scored yesterday. Was that strategic or are they hurt?

ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if Jesuit had their normal 5th runner it would have made a difference. WG had 5 guys in top 25 and averaged 16:33. They beat Jesuit by 27 points.
ReplyDeleteJesuit was missing Matt Strangio, who has been in their top 3 almost all season as a frosh. Idk why he didn't race. But Walt has been doing this a long time. I trust he knows what he's doing here.

ReplyDeleteBronco invitational was a fantastic meet. Run way more smoothly than last year with some great xc weather. I didn't see any runners with allergy problems. Hope the wet weather continues all the way to section finals.
ReplyDeleteRio Americano boys and vista del lago girls look like the clear favorite d3 teams heading to sections. Jesuit looked beatable but w/o 2 of their top 5 running.

The Hayward course isn't short of 3 miles, it's just a different 3 mile. The finishing straight has actually been shortened in this configuration, so it'd be pretty dang lame/stupid if it was short because there's no reason for it to be. This course is a bit faster probably due to (as I believe has been mentioned) the absence of two uphills. The large hill is still run two times, as it was in the previous setup. If I'm not mistaken; the new 2017 course will be different as well in order to finish on the all-weather track Hayward HS has closed the old course down to build, so the records from previous seasons will probably be sealed anyways.

Thanks Bill! Bronco Invite was a lot of fun (and work). We got lucky that the rain held off. We had some minor glitches and learned a few things. We will do better on chip collecting process next year. Overall, we're pleased.
ReplyDeleteThe nature of cross country is that courses are always changing. The true comparison is only on the day of the race. Even then, that can be affected as it was two years ago at the State meet when the first race had perfect conditions and later had heat and a dust storm. That's why college recruiters focus on track times. Still, I love XC more.
ReplyDeleteSelena, look at moving to chip-in-the-bib technology next year. They did it at Crystal and it worked like a dream. Kids don't have to put anything on their shoe and there is no collection at the end. I think the Serra coaches said they cost about $.20 per.

ReplyDeleteChip-in-the-bib is great as long as you have an army (your xc team) to afix those onto the bib # (2 strips per bib) then add to that the label you should/could also put on the bib so you know who gets what bib #. If you do by your lonesome, it will take you a season of House Of Cards to prepare all the bibs (for a Crystal Springs Inv size race).

ReplyDeleteJust for fun, I slotted Strangio in the top 10 at Bronco Invite and recalculated scores. Willow Glen still beats Jesuit, 72-78.
ReplyDeleteThe WG win over Jesuit still doesn't make sense, even if you put Strangio back in. Jesuit beat them head-to-head by 80+ at Stanford so you would think that WG would have to run out of their minds to win at the Bronco. However, the times don't show that as only 1 of the top 7 ran a faster adjusted time. Did Jesuit run all out or was this a true win for WG?
ReplyDelete@6:47. A win is a win. If the starting quarterback doesn't play and you lose is it still a loss? If the other team doesn't try, have a bad day or run their best guys is it less of a win?
ReplyDeleteHank, Mt. Sac has temporary shoe chips that you get to keep this year. That is also an option.

@8:05 Good point but a win with a big improvement has greater implications for league and section finals. It appears that Jesuit had a bad day or "jogged" because they have an upcoming meet. Seems strange that they would do that at an invitational but it could be because they just wanted more time on the course. Time will tell but for now, WG's "win is a win" as you say.
