A warm day today -- so how were conditions at Crystal itself in terms of heat, wind, etc? I was expecting to see faster times from the top teams in the Championship Varsity race, especially the 3-5 guys from each school (more of them under 16:00).
ReplyDeleteIt was 89 degrees at Championship race time, no breeze to keep things cool. Times definitely suffered from the excessive heat.
ReplyDeleteHow many times did Bob Rush have to call for an ambulance?
ReplyDeleteBy my count, they had to go get 3 with the pick up, 1 with the on-site ambulance, 1 transported out in called ambulance and fire truck. Lots of collapsing at the finish. I know our sport is typically no-cut at most schools, but we also have to use some common sense when the temps are up. If a kid is not in race shape, he or she should not be running at Crystal in temps over 80.
ReplyDeleteIt's not always the slower runners. I've seen more top runners go down than those in the back of the pack over the years.
ReplyDeleteOne question is why are the varsity races not in the prime time slots?
I'm assuming you can't start earlier than 9 am? Championship girls at 9, Chsmpionshipraces boys at 9:30.
Maybe start JV & Frosh Soph at the mile mark and run the last 1.95 miles.
I agree with starting the varsity races earlier in the day, especially early in the season. The JV races had much better temps than the varsity by about 20 degrees. The times probably would have been better but the positions likely would not have changed.
ReplyDeleteI like the time change for Varsity and Championship. Don't shorten the FS distance unless it's a hot day.

ReplyDeleteA few recommendations...
1. Girls running is just as big as the boys. Have a girls championship race with the best teams.
2. Morning is usually best at Crystal. Give the best conditions to the best runners. Here is a recommended schedule:
8:30 Varsity Girls
9:00 Championship Girls
9:30 Championship Boys
10:00 Varsity Boys
10:30 Frosh Soph Girls
11:00 Frosh Soph Boys
11:30 JV Girls
12:00 JV Boys
3. Perhaps move the invite a week or two later into the season. Better chance of cooler weather.
@5:12 I agree with your changes to the time schedule. The big races should be earlier in the day. I don't agree with pushing this big time event later in the season bc it will interfere with league races and some schools will not go. As for girls races, I agree but Serra is a boys only school and they don't always get that. There is time to learn.
ReplyDeleteThe runners have canopies, but the fans need shade too. Plant some trees or put in a solar farm like the high school parking lots have.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the championship races should be earlier in the day and forwarded that suggestion to the meet director. This year, they did have a championship girls race.
ReplyDeleteLastly, the park has MANY restrictions and one of them is planting of trees. You will not be seeing trees being planted which means adults have to take care of their own shade when it comes to watching hot weather meets on that course.
How about an open air bar like the ones on the beaches in HI? We could send up a drone and beam back the races to big screen TVs.

I recall a drone there a couple years back. SAM and snipers were on high alert until the threat was grounded.
