ReplyDeleteCoaches had the ability to use those times for the entries. Deadline was 11pm.
ReplyDeleteWe will see how he performs here, but I've got to say I've been super impressed by Patrick Olson from Aptos. I know him personally, and of course I'll be a bit biased, but lets just say that the lack of results for the last year and a half aren't a mistake, he didn't have any at all. He's been running terrifically, running times that he never has run before, and he's been progressing virtually every meet at every distance. Give him a really good, hard race like this and he will show up. But no matter what, come the end of the season, it will be a really impressive story. Keep an eye on him.
ReplyDeleteI second that. Olson was one of the top freshman and he is now back ruining as well as ever. He will be a factor at CCS.
ReplyDeleteWhy is there a FS division for the boys and no equivalent for the girls?
ReplyDeleteIn the past, they have had a FS Top 8 meet but no such meet for the past two years. Typically, most meets have more boys competing and good freshmen girls can compete quite well against junior/senior girls. That is usually not the case with freshmen/sophomore boys against upperclassmen.

ReplyDeleteAlex Scales ran 1:55.97 at Serra HS leading the race after the first 100. He actually ran most of the race with one shoe as somebody flat tired him in the first 100. Definitely a guy to watch this Friday.
ReplyDeleteWhy are the meets called the Top 7 and Top 8?
ReplyDeleteThe Serra Top 7 Invitational used to be the San Mateo County Top 7 meet. It started in 1988. I assume that the top 7 competitors competed in each event. The meet later expanded to it's current format.
ReplyDeleteI am guessing the CCS Top 8 meet had a similar format in the beginning. Perhaps Hank could confirm or not?
Since we only care about distance races here - who are the contenders in the 1600 and 3200 for girls, boys, and FS?
ReplyDeleteyes, originally the Top 8 meet had one heat of 8 for all events that I recall. 1st year was 1980:

Then more athletes were taken in the fields and distance races. The fudging of marks also got out of hand so I imagine going to more heats made up for the fudge factor. And now we're at the 37th running and there are usually 2 heats (and sometimes 3 heats) of all the events so that the top 16-24 entered athletes in CCS get to compete against each other.

Serra's track has 7 lanes hence the name. If I recall correctly they ran prelims for short sprints in the morning to determine the top 7 then ran a final later.

What happened to Scales in the 3200?
ReplyDeleteDid Alex hurt himself with that flip at the finish of the 1600? He didn't look right from the start of the 3200.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I heard he was pretty sore, so he shut it down to rest for the DMR @ StFrancis today.
