Coming up...

A report highlighting from this past weekend's top performances. If you have performances that should be included in the report, feel free to add them to the comment section below. I will also preview some of the meets coming up this weekend.

I am also working on a couple of interviews. As always, if you have any athletes or coaches or other people that you would like to see interviewed, add their names in the comment section below.

  3. Does anyone know how entry times are verified for the K-bell? It looks like most are faster than the actual PRs from this year and last. There are a whole bunch of .00 times which makes me think they are estimating at the very least. Why do this for the first big invite of the year?

  4. Pretty typical for some coaches to post estimated times for their athletes when exact times are not required.

  5. Is it just the fractions that they estimate or the full seconds as well? I see a few kids posted at 4:29 flat for the 1600 when they have never run that time in completion. Is time inflation representative of training times or just wishful thinking?

  6. Some coaches enter times that their athletes have run last season or early this season. Some coaches enter their athletes with times that they think will get them in the fast heat so they can run with a faster group. Sometimes that works and sometimes their athletes get overwhelmed and upset other athletes, coaches and parents who wonder why they weren't in the same heat with legit times.

  7. Would it be better for everyone to put in real times?

  8. No some kids become way much faster from the previous year after running xc.for example the guy who finished second from Vernau ran a 9:56 2 mile and his PR was a 10:23 and his coach had entered him as a 9:50

  9. Very few meets take the time to verify marks, it takes ALOT of time. I do the CCS Top 8 meet and would not want to take on another one.

  10. I will do the verification for any meets that want it. I like that kind of stuff. Let me know.

  11. Cut the coaches some slack. It's a lot harder to get an assessment of times than it looks, especially for a large and diverse team. Doubly so at the beginning of the season, when some athletes are just joining the team after finishing winter sports playoffs.

Athletic.net (the entry system used for K-bell this year) defaults to the athlete's best time in the database - at this point in the season, usually not a recent time. But the alternatives to using the default are to enter a time - which you've got to estimate - or enter NT (no time). In my experience, choosing an estimate is a mixture of thoughtful analysis and last-minute panic. Some are going to turn out well, and some won't. And NT isn't appropriate for kids who obviously deserve to be further up in the heats.

I may not know what little Billy can run for 1600, but I know that he runs with Johnny in practice, who ran 5:10 in our time trial - but that was three weeks ago on a really windy day, plus he wasn't feeling well, so I should put Billy in at...oh wait, Billy's mother emailed and said he can't make it anyway. Never mind. Oh no, that's Billy Smith's mom, not Billy Thomas. Well in that case...5:08 sounds good. He's also doubling in the 800. He ran...2:35 last year. Really? wow, he's improved a lot. I guess I'll put him at...2:27? Sure. One down, 165 to go...

tl dr - It's the first big meet of the season. Let it go.

  12. Understood. Maybe we could check the last 2 "premier" heats in any event so that those kids are where they should be? That shouldn't take that long.
