Today's CCS races have shown that it takes 6 runners to be a great team.
ReplyDeleteIt would be nice if Red Cap Timing could do their job and update the results. They make a lot of money and do not provide quality product. Thanks Red Cap.
ReplyDeleteRed Cap did a great job at sub-sections, but they had a transmission glitch at sections. I was bummed too. It's technology...where is the redundancy? They did post the results on the wall pretty quick though, in case you were waiting for a certain race.

ReplyDeleteThat was something else today. I heard from so many other coaches that said they have never seen a team win two section championships by tiebreakers. I also know there is definitely some luck involved when the scores are so close.

ReplyDeleteSpikes are allowed unless specifically prohibited. The state meet bulletin does prohibit spikes at the state meet, but there is no state wide ban of spikes in all meets. Individual sections may prohibit spikes (for example, the CCS prohibits spikes at the section meet). Individual meets can also prohibit spikes, which is the rule at the Stanford Invitational. For what it's worth, the meet information for the SJS section finals do not prohibit spikes, so unless there were specific instructions from meet management prohibiting spikes, then they would presumably be legal.
From my understanding, spikes are not allowed at any CA HS XC race.

ReplyDeleteMy heart goes out to Luke McCartney in the D4 boys race. Makes the podium but misses team and individual qualification by 0.2 seconds.
ReplyDeleteWillow Glen ran a great team race and came within 7 points of the winner, St Francis. At the 2-mile split they we're only 4 off the lead and 1 in front of SI, which finished 23 in back of WG. It will be fun to see these 3 teams go at it again at State!!!

ReplyDeleteAw man, and his team missed qualification for his team on a tiebreaker. That's really rough, and he is a super super great kid with a lot of heart. He even won the league finals over his teammate that will go to state.
With that said, he's had a great XC career. His freshman year, he was funny enough, the 6th runner on the SV CCS team that qualified for state on his own tiebreaker. It was the first time the scotts valley team ever qualified for state. Since then, he's been on the team thats won a league championship, CCS title and a 3rd place at state. Too bad it ends here, but he's a guy that will stand tall at the end of the day. Even if he is kind of short.

ReplyDeleteMilesplit CA has a merge outside the paywall. While there is some great free stuff on MS, I recommend paying the relatively small price to get all of the data and sorting capabilities.
ReplyDeleteSaint Francis is so cocky, bashing other programs like they are soooo good. I remember a few years ago they didn't even make CCS. With the talent they get I would be embarrassed if we didn't win CCS every year. I'm more impressed with what Williw Glen did taking average runners and making them good than SF taking superstars and barely winning.
ReplyDeleteOnce again - three of the SF seven did not run in their Freshman year, including their NUMBER ONE. One more guy did not run XC until he was a Freshman - nothing, ever, zip before 9th grade. The only guy who had any significant experience is the current Freshman who came from a private MS and was likely not going to his local public school. This is getting old. Do your homework before you run your mouth. The SF kids work hard and are coached by 2 of the best guys in the area. That is how they won the CCS this year. As for SF bashing other programs - who, when, where? I know those kids. They are very humble and respectful. You would like them if you got to know them. Stop by the tent at State and I am sure they will be glad to say hi.

ReplyDeleteJesuit's depth continues to impress me. Their top 3 Freshman and top 4 Sophomores from yesterday's SJS sections will make a formidable Varsity squad in 2 years to come. I would have to say that Ben Holland should probably ranked higher than Kurdy now based on the last 3 meets, which I had accounted as race tactics.

Pursue other passions? Where did you hear that. I have spoken to Vernau on a couple of occasions and he is one of the most driven kids I have ever been around. He gives the strong impression of wanting to be the best possible runner he can be and I would be shocked that if he had the opportunity to run beyond the state me, if he didn't take it. You've got to admire a kid who is willing to crash and burn in search of his best. He's clearly not afraid to lead at all and takes great pride in keeping races honest and enjoys going against the best of the best.
ReplyDeleteAs for Fiona, I have a couple of opinions, which are just that, opinions. Her team clearly didn't need her to win sections. They will need her to have a shot at getting an NXN spot. With their strong boys team, she has a handful of runners who can challenge her in practice, which, unfortunately is not the case in most of the races. The last three meets, she has been running all around the course, with the team flag, cheering on her teammates, so I sincerely believe this is erring on the side of caution (understandable if you have ever seen Frog Town or Willow Hill). Could there be some gamesmanship from her coaches? Maybe. How many races has Destiny Collins run this year?
In CCS there is a 50% rule for league contests or you need a medical waiver to participate. I don't think there's anything like that in SJS but the we would know for sure.
ReplyDeleteShe missed Clovis, Mt. Sac, League, Semis, Section. Hasn't raced since September. Maybe she's feeling better and supporting the team or it is a more serious medical issue. Regardless the only gamesmanship is the secrecy. No one misses 7 consecutive weeks and says they are "resting." If she runs its because she was finally cleared.
On another note CCS was much slower than the league meets the week before. Some ran faster but not many? Why?
Fiona O'Keeffe has been dealing with tendinitis since early October. They have been very cautious with her with the championship season as the top priority. It was decided the day before the SJS meet that Fiona would not race. I am fairly certain that she will lace them up at the state final to give her team a shot at making NXN.

The wind definitely picked it up for the later races so that was a factor. The league races were a week before on the same course (maybe better conditions for league finals).
ReplyDeleteIf you look at the results for the Central Section on the Woodward Park course a week before the state meet, you will see the same pattern of results there for the Central Section athletes.
Fiona O'Keeffe is a joy to watch run. You don't get to see someone that good very often. I hope she heals quickly and completely and we get to see her at State. Good luck Fiona!
ReplyDeleteHow about Katz from Los Gatos? Went to JC and not a major contributor at Stanford. She went from JC to Stanford kids! Keep running, go to JC if you want. Your life isn't over if you don't get into your top choice right after HS.

Stanford also only accepts between 20 and 35 transfer students each year.
So yes, go to JC and run there, but don't count on Stanford. Lots of other options...
