Big difference between Mile Split prediction and the one based on combined times on Lynbrook site. Which is more representative - MS based on PR's, or Lynbrook based on sectionals corrected for course? I like Lynbrook only because it shows more CCS teams closer to the top but are the course conversions right?
ReplyDeletei am really interested to see how NorCal teams do, particularly, Jesuit, Davis and Bella Vista. I think that Jesuit ran through sections knowing that even if they fell apart completely, they and Davis were, by far, the most complete boys teams in the section. I would really keep an eye on Michael Vernau, He is still figuring out racing at the highest high school level, but my sense is that he is on the cusp of really figuring it out and could finish as high as top 3. Everybody knows about Fiona and I think she'll be just fine. I believe she has only been beaten at Woodward one time and that was when she let Destiny Collins get away a bit in the early part of the Clovis meet a couple years back. She never made that mistake again and has dominated at the state meet, I expect to see the same tomorrow. Bella Vista is an up and coming power. Their girls teams have been good for a couple of years now, but their boys have an outstanding crop of Sophomores and Juniors. They are probably 2 years from their peak, but have the kind of numbers that can absorb injuries and push an unexpected runner to elite heights. I'm also hoping some of the boys and girls from the Bay Area do well. All packed up and getting ready to head down before sunrise!

ReplyDeleteCONGRATS Cooper Teare (D5 Boys State CHAMP), Kiera Marshall (D5 Girls runner-up), and Emily Perez (D5 Girls 5th place) for representing SJND at the state podium. Also, congratulations to SJND girls team as the D5 State runner-up!!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like the top 5 girls not on the top 2 teams (i.e. the ones invited to NXN) are all from NorCal - Ratliff, Coonfield, Meeks, McCandless, and Starn. Way to represent!
ReplyDeleteCCS with two individual champions: Meeks (Gunn) in Div.II & Ratliff (Santa Cruz)in Div.IV.
ReplyDeleteCate Ratliff had the fastest girl's time of the day (17:03!!).
Santa Cruz ran the fastest team time ever for Div.IV (1:33:53) even they though finished 2nd today behind Bishop Amat.
Cate Ratliff beat the all-time Div. IV time held by Anna Maxwell of SLV.
Aptos girls.....Div.III State Champs! They had the 5th fastest team time of the day (all divisions) and the 4th fastest team time ever in Div.III.
Santa Cruz girls made the podium...2nd. SLV finished 4th. A great day for SCCAL.

ReplyDeleteSanta Cruz team time was a minute faster than the winning team in D4. However, they were beaten by 41 points. Obviously, having Ratliff or any other outstanding individual really is a game changer in team time. XC meets are not scored by team time, but NXN bids are, make ya wonder is that the best way to pick the NXN qualifiers?

ReplyDelete2:28 not sure how winning CCS is blowing up at the end of the season? If you mean their race today at state - their #1 has a bad foot, and their #3 thru a shoe in the start area. Both kids ran their hearts out, in real pain, to finish the race. If that is blowing up, then we should all want kids like that on our team that are willing to "blow up." Kind of puts the myth to the "private school kids are soft" BS.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry. Jesuit doesn't get the at large after a solid 3rd in the CA power merge? Who's to blame here? Rich Gonzalez clearly not giving any credit to the norcal team in the mix... And the rest of the committee because apparently California doesn't deserve an at large even though we are clearly the fastest State.
ReplyDeleteWow I was surprised that Madera South didn't make it as an at-large birth from California. 15:39 average time would win most state championships... but I guess there are only 22 spots.
ReplyDeleteGreat Oak looked vulnerable with Davis giving them a run for their money after a two point loss. If Fiona O'Keeffe wasn't still recovering and a sub-par race, we might have different state champs in D1. They will face again at NXN again, and another week of recuperation for Fiona.
All-CCS teams will be voted on Tuesday. They will be posted in the San Jose Mercury News.
ReplyDeleteFor those of you remarking on how teams did at the state meet today, it's a very tough meet and lots of things can happen leading up to as well as during the race. I can speak from experience that it's a great honor to qualify to the state meet as well as a very humbling experience.
I also just got back to school so while I get my act together here, please feel free to continue the conversation but let's keep it positive.
Bill, Madera South is a very good team, that got beat by Jesuit the two times they met this year, both at Woodward Park. There slightly superior team average was on the back of Lalo Herrera, who earned his spot at NXN. I don't understand why teams that finish 4th I their region are getting nods over California teams. Part of me feels like this is where rankings hurt non Southern Section teams in California The official CIF Rich Gonzalez rankings slowly dropped Jesuit's rankings after Clovis, though the only teams they lost to all year were 2 of the top 10 teams in the nation. it seems like the national rankings are greatly influenced by this as their national ranking dropped as well. So, the 17th ranked team in the nation is not worthy of an at large bid when they race in the fastest and largest state in the union. One has to wonder if their fate would be different if they were a Southern Section school. Who is on this committee? What is the criteria? What was the vote? Seems kind of like FIFA voting on World Cup bids.
ReplyDeleteFiona O'Keeffe is not actually "recovering" - that will happen after the season's over. She's just running hurt right now to try and help her team.
ReplyDeleteNot sure we'll see much improvement from her at NXN as she was limping very noticeably after today's race.
Davis girls were very impressive getting that close to Great Oak, who is the 2nd ranked team in the country. A healthy Fiona would have tipped the scales in a very interesting way.
Ca teams do not have a great history at NXN. It's a pretty big country.
ReplyDeleteIs it about results at NXN or a reward for those teams that should get in? Guessing you could choose 7 teams or less with a chance to win. I believe we saw two teams today with top ten all time and three in top thirty all time at Clovis on the boys side. Some good teams have run there. Go kick some ass Great Oak, Davis and Dana Hills.

Obviously Cate was very impressive, but Morgin was only 4 seconds back and ended the day with the second fastest time at the meet, second fastest in d4 history beating the previous record along with Cate, and the 11th fastest time in state meet history regardless of division. Not bad for someone who came into the day ranked 8th in nor cal and 25th in the state.

ReplyDeleteI just have to say.........Fiona O'Keeffe got injured after visiting colleges and the traveling was very taxing thus making her susceptible to injury. The last she time she raced was a league meet on Oct. 7 where the team ran as a pack. Ever since then, she has probably hasn't run much. To go out there at the State meet, on her senior year, severely injured (probably a little out of shape) and run for her team, is hands-down remarkable. She was definitely not 100%....or even 20% of her full ability and STILL placed 8th overall. That is jaw-dropping. But, what is even more impressive is the courage she had to run knowing that she wouldn't get her third state title. It is really telling of her team-oriented attitude, her mental strength, and her caring personality. Huge props to O'Keeffe.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what Louis has to say. I saw a bandaged-up Fiona at SJS sections champs carrying the Davis flag, dashing over various parts of the course, cheering on her teammates.
ReplyDeleteI think a lot of that has a lot to do with the team culture of the Davis team. That said, there is no denying that Fiona is a great teammate and she stepped to the line at the state meet for her teammates.
ReplyDeleteThe 2.05 mile split for State seems slow compared to the last mile, which seems really fast. The data indicates the splits are for 1 mile, 2.05 miles (so a 1.05 mile distance), and 5K or 3.10 (also a 1.05 mile). My daughter passed the 2-mile clock at 12:06ish, but her split says 12:45. That would make her 2nd (1.05) mile a 6:52 and her last mile (1.05) mile a searing 5:34. Anyone know where they actually clock the times?

ReplyDeleteActually this has been discussed before. The mile split is correct. The 2nd split is probably more like 2.12-2.14 considering the finish line is about 100m. ahead of the starting line. That means the last mile split is not really a mile but shorter.
ReplyDeleteOkay. Makes sense. Still in relation to everyone else in the D2 race, my daughter had the 3rd fastest last split, but placed 24th. She went out conservatively. Very happy with her time, but it is a little difficult to determine splits.

@8:00 Dang it--you got me. I actually tried to delete that after I posted, but it didn't delete. Really. I suppose it is a brag (humble or no) because I found that she had the fifth fastest split in that leg of the race (D1 & D2 combined!!). That's if all thirds splits are equally measured for all individuals, which I imagine they are. Correct me if that's not true. I honestly find it incredible, which is why I was inquiring. I'm excited, but also wondering if I'm mistaken.

ReplyDeleteThe Mercury will post their All-Mercury list (which only includes Santa Clara County, San Mateo County and schools in those Leagues, like all of the WCAL schools even though some are in SF). The All-CCS teams will be posted after that and the all Nor-Cal teams posted around Christmas.
