  2. Brutally hot at Farmers at 3:00!

  3. Why do so many meets put the varsity runners in the prime early-morning spots to compete? So many races put freshman or JV runners first leaving the varsity left to just survive. Haven't they paid their dues?

Like Chieftain, why not run Varsity at 9am and 9:30? Or at the very least 10am & 10:30am after the Frosh-Soph?

Let the seniors who have worked hard for 4 years and at their best have the opportunity to do so!

  5. The DeLaSalle Invite was interesting, on the girls side, Fiona O'Keeffe took off from the gun and nobody was brave enough to try to go with her. Her 16;41 time topped Julia Stamps and Sara Bei from over 15 years ago. After coming in 4th at NXN, it would seem that Destiny Collins is the only woman in the state who could keep her from another state title. As the second fastest returner to NXN (assuming she gets there injury free), she is also a reasonable bet to be atop the podium there. If you get a chance to see her, do it. I also have to give props to Michael Vernau of the Davis boy's team, he took off from the gun and is now 3 for 3 in invitationals this season. Davis had been scheduled to run the Stanford Invitation, but I didn't see them on the teams listed, so it would seem that Jesuit and Bellarmine can stake a claim to early season NorCal dominance with a good showing there. The Davis girls were their consistent self, but it seems their gap is going to need to tighten to compete with the elite So Cal teams. The Jesuit boys steamrolled the competition including Davis, Monte Vista and Long Beach Poly by putting their top 5 runners ahead of both the Davis and Monte Vista 3rd man as well as LBP's second.

  7. 5:52 pm writes "Like Chieftain, why not run Varsity at 9am and 9:30? Or at the very least 10am & 10:30am after the Frosh-Soph?"

Chieftain isn't a good example for your point - varsity girls started around noon and varsity boys around 12:45. It was pretty warm for them!

  8. I don't think there is anything wrong with having the younger athletes running in the early morning. The varsity athletes should be able to handle running in the heat better than their younger cohorts. At the end of the season, those athletes may also have to run in later races at their section or state meets and might as well learn how to handle running in those conditions now.

  9. To 7:43AM:
What we have here is a failure to communicate.
5:52PM was using Chieftain as 'an example' of an invitational that 'has the varsity races scheduled later.'
He said, "Like Chieftain, why not run Varsity at 9:00am or 9:30?" ("Like Chieftain... why not have the Varsity run at 9:00am?")
He didn't say, "Like Chieftain does and have the Varsity races at 9:00am."

Regardless...it seems like a valid point. Run the varsity races when it's cooler. Faster times in the varsity races is better for all involved. Runners, spectators and coaches.

  10. Clearly they meant "Like Chieftain, why not have varsity run at 9am and 9:30? Or at the very least 10am & 10:30am after the Frosh-Soph?"

Varsity should get the prime weather, bottom line. And the later the season goes the cooler the temperatures. Not many 100 degree days in November. Let the varsity have the best opportunity to run fast.

  11. There clearly is confusion here, because clearly Varsity Girls race at 9:00 a.m. and the Varsity boys race at 9:45 a.m.

We're talking about the Chieftain Invitational in Rogue River, Oregon, right?

    Posts above clear as mud!

    LOL!
