  1. Like no one is practicing with the coaches :-)

  2. Not "officially." ;)

  3. I know multiple schools that have already started. I'm not talking handing the kids a training plan but full on mandatory practice. I'm not talking small skill groups as Albert pasted. I'm talking all the coaches there, etc.
So do you just need to call it "unofficial" and it's all good?

  4. Big difference between central section's start of Jan 13 and San Diego's Fen 24. Though let's be honest, they start before that.

  5. How are the offical practice dates determined?

  6. With the spring track season just a few short weeks away, vital winter training sessions continue, and athletes not currently participating in a winter sport are expected to attend these critical workouts after school daily. Check the TRAINING PAGE for event group specific workout calendars!

  7. For the record I believe training year round is important to improve as a runner and I think every good program has some kind of training program in the winter. Some hand a schedule, others are more regimented. I think it is important for all coaches to encourage their athletes to play a winter sport, one great example being Bret Gotcher who played basketball until his Senior year, just to name one of many (kids he just finished 5th in the trials ran at Stanford and was on of the top distance runners in HS). But what about those not in a sport? Well it gets tricky doesn't it. You want to build your program and do what's right as a coach and for the athlete.

But then you have coaches who tell their athletes to not do another sport (maybe not so much in running where top 7 is very clear) but athletes who do another sport are degraded and told they are not dedicated. So we have rules.

So what's ok? Handing a training plan? Being there as a supervisor for safety? What about a school fitness running club?

Rules are very gray. I think there are those that push the limits. But those grays are ruled on by the section office. If there's a problem talk to the coach, league rep, section office.

  8. The starting dates are determined by each section but I am really not sure why there are so many different starting dates when the state meet is the same for everybody.

  9. Any idea which schools Eugene Hamiliton III and John Lawson are attending? Original plan I thought were AZst and UCLA but don't see them listed on their roster.

  10. I heard both are at Cal but are not listed on the team roster. Red-shirting?

  11. Cal...where middle-distance and distance runners go to never be heard from again. Montano being the rare exception. Great education though!

  12. Not that I disagree with what your saying but Cal has produced some great runners who went on to do very well post collegiately. Google Richie Boulet, Madalena Lewy (Boulet), Bolota Asmerom, Peter Gilmore, Steve Moreno... Just to name a few.

Not to mention Cal produced the one, the only Craig Lee.

  14. And Chelsea Reilly is doing well, and current All-American Kelsey Santisteban is no slouch.

  15. David Torrence and Deborah Maier did/are doing pretty well also.

  16. So...... Are they at Cal?

  17. They are both alums, got much better while at Cal, and not dead. David at the very least ran workouts at Cal in the last few years.
