Well you haven't interviewed Gabe Arias and he was coached by Kevin McCarthy from the Pleasanton Heat. He is a beloved coach and bunch of good local runners came from his team.

ReplyDeleteAgreed, if the Pleasanton Heat were a high school team, they'd be the Miami Heat of the NCS. Could you imagine if a team today simultaneously had Hurlock, Goltra and Arias in a lineup?

How many kids form the Heat have burned out?

ReplyDelete^surprisingly, not a lot. I know Nolan Peterson is running at NAU, Tyler Troxel is doing alright at Chico state, and Parker Deuel is doing well at Alabama. I know there are more out there, but I think most runners are faring well.
ReplyDeleteOn the girls side, Megan McCandless, Sophie Hartley of Granada, Julia Bounds of St. Francis, Annika Green with Amador all were on the Heat and have trained with Coach Kevin and still attend a summer camp in the Sequoias with him each year.
ReplyDeleteOther younger boys include Kent Slaney at Paly, Peter Schlacte of Amador and Matt Salazar of Casa Grande. Fantastic coach and mentor
and all of these kids still text and consult with Kevin.

ReplyDeleteKevin doesn’t burn kids out- he is an excellent mentor and coach. Having worked with so many youth, he knows what is appropriate for the ages and various abilities of the runners he has worked with. I worry more about the high school coaches who push kids too hard trying to make reputations for themselves, rather than developing talent and preparing them for college and beyond. In addition, it is astounding, but not surprising that many coaches take the view that successful runners are the result of their “program” rather than the dedication, hard work and talent of the athlete- Kevin is not one of those.
ReplyDeleteStrongly agree with 6:26. Kevin is all about the kids and is much a mentor as a coach.

ReplyDeleteI would love to see an interview with Sarah Robinsn from Gunn. I think it would be interesting to hear her story and see how she initially got into running and how she balances two sports.

Andy Ehrenberg, Zach Beston, and Ben Zaeske are three other runners who came from the Pleasanton Heat, and all of them ran well at State.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous 7;48. Not sure what your referring to as I've not posted on this thread (until now) and only post under my name. We are long time supporters of both SRV and Heat athletes and have many good friends from both programs.
ReplyDeleteSRV had another great year - their results speak for themselves. The special relationship many athletes develop with coach Kevin should in no way diminish the hard work put in by any number of responsible, supportive and highly qualified coaches in the east bay. I don't believe I've made any comment here to suggest otherwise.
SJND is a great program with a top guy but with all the comments on every post clamoring for an interview, theyre losing their professional luster. They shouldn't be clamoring for an interview. Their running speaks for itself.

Yeah but you never see De la Salle or campolindo running their mouths all over the site. Props to them for keeping things professional and letting the racing do the talking.

Man you guys are crazy? Check out some of the smack talk in other sports on their message boards and report back. This is the tamest comment section I've seen, boarding on lame. Shesh.

I like those Olson twins from Livermore. These guys did pretty well at State, one won NCS for D2. They are fairly new to XC and they're just killing it!
ReplyDeleteOK, now that Anon 9:34 am mentions it, is it my imagination or are there a lot of successful twins in XC/Track? Besides the Livermore Olsons, there are the O'Dowd Burkes, the Melendez *triplets*, and I seem to remember seeing a lot more at, say, the Dublin Distance Fiesta. Is this just statistics, or are there more twins running distance well than chance would dictate?
ReplyDeleteGoltra has a twin who used to run CYO when they were younger. Both boys transferred to Campolindo because it was better academic school.

ReplyDeleteIf you interviewed an athlete in a previous year I think that it would be interesting if you did follow up interviews to already add on to what they said before. This way he or she could talk about recent experiences. For example Blair Hurlock was interviewed two years ago and obviously a lot has happened since then. This would be awesome if this happens, please consider it.

In a few weeks interview the big three: Goltra, Huxham, and Hurlock. Ask them to talk about their just finished XC season + the training that went into it. Plans for their track seasons. Where they're going to college, why they picked the schools they did.
ReplyDelete2-3 questions from each is all that's needed but I do like the idea of a "where are they now" segment.
