That is correct that this is the first year that they have one heat each for the 3200m. I wasn't at the CCS meeting that changed that format so I don't know the rationale there. I think the girls' heat will get strung out and there might be more of an issue of lapped runners but the boys' race could get interesting with the possibility of over 20 boys battling for those 12 spots.
Boys 1600 will be the hardest race to qualify. Many guys that can go 1-11 Say Yohaness qualifies in the 1600 and 3200 at CCS finals. I think he will only run te 3200 at State. The 1600 has. Yohaness. Murphy. Vasquez. Baier. Layten. Garibay. The El Camino guy. Scott Edwards. Berritiua and this Welsh kid that came from nowhere. And Bereket. Maybe the best 1600 ever at CCS. The at large is 4:16.38. It's gonna be a great race.

I don't think I've ever seen a race that big. If you are going to run 37 at trials, why not just let in 16 to finals? I'm sure there must be a good explanation, but anything over 24 seems like way too big of a race to me. They would add extra heats to accommodate the auto qualifiers in other events, but cram 37 girls into one heat of the 3200?
In a meet where you keep others from competing by not scratching like at section meet and state you are required by rule to race by the honest effort rule. Not to mention this is just looks very badly on the coach.
This also happened at the Olympics last year. The guy ran but tanked it. He was DQ'd from the rest of the meet.
If you are entered at this point you have to run or you are out of the meet.
@Anon 11:59 - Layten scratched at the PAL meeting earlier this week, and an alternate got in. This is the standard procedure, and also why he doesn't appear in the 1600 on either the entries or heat sheets in this very post. Where are you getting your information that he is in? He isn't.
Anonymous at 12:05... Did you even watch the Olympics? Yes makloufi ran the 800 easy, but he was let back in and ended up winning the 1500. Where were you.
Don't forget that George Baier was the first alternate in the 1600 going into the finals last year and when there was a scratch, he replaced that runner and won the race.
Shorten the meet and increase risk of tripping/failing/DQ's from congestion by cutting heats of the 3200. 40 minutes for 8 heats is scheduled for 100, 200, 400, IH, 4X100. If these events are cut by 1 minute per heat (from 5 minutes to 4 minutes), then 40 minutes, without the risk being created in the 3200, are saved.
@ 1:48 Kylie did not have to go full out in the 800, and what heat she is in really doesnʻt matter for Sat. Like everyone else, the goal right now is to qualify to the next race. Looking forward to an exciting meet all around.
Interesting that Anna Maxwell chose the 3200 over the 800 given she owns the state leading time at 800m and will likely face Sarah Baxter in the 3200 at State if she chooses to run the 1600/3200 double in Clovis. In any event, good luck to her and all the CCS runners!
On Maxwell, after Looking at the SCCAL results and the Video's she Looks like she can Handle the 1600m/3200m double very well. Baxter hasn't looked like she has changed any running strategies in the Last 3 years. Were Maxwell has. With Maxwell, Hiltz, Goo and Robinson CCS will Be Very well Represented at State on the Girls Distance side.

If CCS is trying to save time why not have 1 heat of the 1600 as well and 2 heats of the 800, just double the kids up in lanes. If you want to really speed up the meet have only 2 heats of the 100, 200, and 400. Just put 2 or 3 kids in each lane and let them go for it. What a ridiculous section - you have your CCS Finals at a high school with 8 lanes and then you come up with a way to screw up the 3200 heats - the chance of a fall is too great and can really mess up someones head. Maybe you can find a nice dirt track to have CCS Finals on next year with hand timing and sawdust for the landing pits. Just DUMB!
Hello Albert, I was at CCS Meeting, when it was Mentioned to us about the Change in the 3200m, I do not remember any talks on the subject though. The Change was Made prior to Meeting I Think. Personally Not a Huge fan of it with 37 Kids racing in One Heat it could have easily been More after looking at all the League results, with so many more close to Standard. The Difference is between CCS and State is the Quality, there might be a 90sec gap at State and a few might get lapped but at Section with over Two Minutes gap and pending on how Several Top runners want to run there race, they will be running in and out of lanes to Pass other runners. But then again every runner there does deserve to compete in the CCS Trials because they Met all the qualifications to get here.
I'm not saying it won't work, but 37 is 7 more than state, and how about this being one of the strongest years ever for the the girls 3200. I wish there had been a better explanation than just trying to save time. We should just do this at Toro.
It appears the decision for one heat for 3200 was for a minimum of 32 entries with no maximum considered. When adding the at large entries on top of the 32, these at large entries will be up in the top half of field (based on their time requirement being met) adding to the congestion up front and a greater risk of going down
The South San Francisco district still has dirt tracks, but they're in the process of replacing them now. I think El Camino's is under construction, and SSF's is breaking ground in the fall. Every other school in the PAL has a surface track, though not all are 8-9 lanes.
Personally, I miss the old dirt tracks. Among other things, every one of them had a rail.

Harker trains at a different track for hurdles and junps. Very nice track for training and less injuries. You feel fast when you get rubbers. They had very sprinters this year.
That's "Train on Dirt, BURN on rubber", was the Lynbrook T-shirt slogan when we were 2nd at CCS and the FUHSD schools were said to be getting all weather tracks - it only took another 8 years to actually happen.
Have you ever run on a dirt track in rainy weather? Have you ever gotten a face full of mud from the runner in front, or slipped in the mud going around a turn? Have you ever almost turned an ankle on a dirt clod that wasn't there the last time you went around that "lovely" dirt track" Methinks dirt-worship is misplaced nostalgia. Very nice when dry and freshly maintained, a total bummer 95% of the time.

ReplyDelete16 or even 20 (like at Top 8) is a great number for a 3200.
State has over 30 competitors in the 3200.
Stanford has had over 60 in a 10k before.
But I agree. This is a senseless trials race, a finals before the finals.
That said why are you complaining now and not earlier when this was proposed?
This is not new. It's been on the CCS website since the fall.

ReplyDeleteOnly at the State Meet. There is no Honest Effort rule in place at CCS (trials or finals).

I know The King's Academy and Woodside Priory in our league have dirt tracks. There must be more out there.

SF, Harbor and Scotts Valley still Have dirt Tracks. But Then Harbor Trains at Soquel, SV trains at SLV, SF trains at Watsonville.
