St. Joseph Notre Dame cross country awarded first place at Stanford after Crespi DQ

  1. Are all the teams in the wrong division DQ'd or just this team because they won?

Doesn't seem fair to single out just one team.

  2. I think they were disqualified b/c they moved down a division, which isn't allowed. But it's fun to move up a division I believe

  3. The rules are pretty clear that you can not run down a division

  4. To be fair it is Pretty clear you can't run up too.

  5. You can't run up once you get into the section meets but Invitationals don't have those restrictions. Since Stanford does have 5 divisions, teams can run in their division and it's possible to move up which happens quite often. Dropping down a division is a whole different story.

  6. Sometimes you HAVE to run up in a division if the division you want to run in is already full. This happened to Lynbrook at Stanford - they had to run D1 since there was no room in D2.

  7. Same with Piner who had to run D3 as the D4 race was already full.

  8. Flintrige Prep competed in the Division IV race at Stanford (They would have won Division V, their true division).

  9. Often it seems like it would be advantageous to run up a division, if the time/condition of the higher division race was more favorable

  10. The rules clearly state: it is the coach's responsibilty to enter the CORRECT division. No astrix that running up is ok. You are justifying breaking the rules. You can declare for the championship race otherwise run in your division.

Running up is just as much against the rules, you are just justifying it. Maybe D1 is slower than D2.... Rules are rules. Lynbrook should be DQ'd!

  11. Yup, running at 9 am in D4 was a huge advantage instead of D5 at 3 pm. Another Chester outed! DQ!!!

  12. It was Meet Mgnmt's choice to require Lynbrook to run D1 - not Lynbrook. Meet Mgmnt made the mistake, they should have just denied the school's entry - but instead they became creative (as XC runners usually are). If anything, Lynbrook's entry fee should be reimbursed to the school since they did not get the product that they were paying for. At least my 2 cents (vs the $160 that was paid).

  13. Did they contact the meet director asking to run D1 because D2 was closed? If not and they entered the wrong division they went against instructions from the meet director and should be DQ'd.

It states it is the coaches responsibility to enter the right division. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.

    Next time enter earlier.

  14. This place is turning into Letsrun. Hardly a Kip Litton scandal... Maybe Albert will create one and only one thread on this scandal? Haha.

If you haven't already, be sure to check out the New Yorker article. Aug.6.2012

  16. Teams have been running up and in different divisions for years at Stanford. It's never been an issue before.

As for the Kip Litton article, I read it and it's worth the read if you have the time. Here is the lhttp://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2012/08/06/120806fa_fact_singer?currentPage=allink:

  17. If you have been doing the wrong thing for years doesn't make it right.

  18. Divisions are based on the total number of sophomores, juniors and seniors at a school.
California high schools compete in the division your school has been assigned to by your
section. For out-of-state high schools, please use the approximations below in effort to
give you an idea of the division your school is. However, please check with your
principal or athletic director for your schools division.
    Division I – (2101 or more)
    Division II – (1651 to 2100)
    Division III – (1151to 1650)
    Division IV – (500 to 1150)
    Division V – (499 and fewer)
Teams WILL compete in their respective division. Please note, it is the responsibility of
the high school coaching staff, NOT MEET MANAGEMENT, to enter your team
correctly. If you want to be considered for the seeded races, indicate your interest when
    you register at EZMeets.com.

  19. Not to change the subject but aren't cbed's 9-12?

Doesn't matter here as CA schools were supposed to enter their division. But couldn't a larger D3 school from SS enter despite being 2000+?

  20. Each section is allowed the freedom to structure their divisions as they please in order to have fair and equal competition at their section final. There are numbers set by the state for Divisions IV and V but Divisions I-III are determined by their own section.

  21. "Not to change the subject but aren't cbed's 9-12?"

Yes, Stanford probably just didn't update the entry info when it was switched from 10-12 a few years ago.

  22. Plain and simple. Crespi cheated and got caught. I doubt they declined to take the trophy home after an honest mistake.
