You can't run up once you get into the section meets but Invitationals don't have those restrictions. Since Stanford does have 5 divisions, teams can run in their division and it's possible to move up which happens quite often. Dropping down a division is a whole different story.
Sometimes you HAVE to run up in a division if the division you want to run in is already full. This happened to Lynbrook at Stanford - they had to run D1 since there was no room in D2.
The rules clearly state: it is the coach's responsibilty to enter the CORRECT division. No astrix that running up is ok. You are justifying breaking the rules. You can declare for the championship race otherwise run in your division.
Running up is just as much against the rules, you are just justifying it. Maybe D1 is slower than D2.... Rules are rules. Lynbrook should be DQ'd!
It was Meet Mgnmt's choice to require Lynbrook to run D1 - not Lynbrook. Meet Mgmnt made the mistake, they should have just denied the school's entry - but instead they became creative (as XC runners usually are). If anything, Lynbrook's entry fee should be reimbursed to the school since they did not get the product that they were paying for. At least my 2 cents (vs the $160 that was paid).
Did they contact the meet director asking to run D1 because D2 was closed? If not and they entered the wrong division they went against instructions from the meet director and should be DQ'd.

Are all the teams in the wrong division DQ'd or just this team because they won?

I think they were disqualified b/c they moved down a division, which isn't allowed. But it's fun to move up a division I believe

Same with Piner who had to run D3 as the D4 race was already full.

Yup, running at 9 am in D4 was a huge advantage instead of D5 at 3 pm. Another Chester outed! DQ!!!

ReplyDeleteDoesn't matter here as CA schools were supposed to enter their division. But couldn't a larger D3 school from SS enter despite being 2000+?

ReplyDeleteYes, Stanford probably just didn't update the entry info when it was switched from 10-12 a few years ago.
Plain and simple. Crespi cheated and got caught. I doubt they declined to take the trophy home after an honest mistake.
