Oregon seems like the place to go to these days. I think if you asked Jordan Hasay where she would go to college during the majority of her high school career, she would have said Stanford. After competing at Oregon, in that setting, it made it a slam dunk for her to choose the Ducks.
ReplyDeleteThe opportunity to run at a school like Oregon is no other. At literally every other school, distance runners get about zero recognition. At Oregon on the other hand, you hear the roar of the crowd as you power down the home stretch at Hayward field.
ReplyDeleteI was at the Stanford vs. Cal meet which takes place at Stanford and it was pitiful how few people were in attendance. Not even enough to fill the first 1-2 rows.
If you have the opportunity to run at Oregon, you should probably take it because you will never, ever have that experience again and the memories you make will be invaluable.
I too heard that Hiltz wants to be an Oregon duck, and after you experience that atmosphere in Eugene, Oregon, it is hard to not want to be knowing you have the support of thousands.
Just because Oregon is a great place to run doesn't mean its the best option for an aspiring female distance runner - even solely from a running aspect. Academics, coaching philosophy and affordability come into play as well. And if you look at the top 3 women (and the college they competed for) at this weekend's US Champs from the 800 on up, Oregon athletes were not much of a factor (much different story on the men's side)....
