Some great efforts tonight highlighted by Carrie Verdon of Campolindo running 10:39.86 and Ben Eversole of Castro Valley who ran 9:08.35. Both marks were meet records. Jenna Pianin of Amador Valley broke the other meet record in the girls' 1600m. with a time of 5:12.30.

ReplyDeleteAccording to Dyestatcal's Thursday update, the boys 1600 and both 3200s from tonight are new state leading times. All of the winning times at least make the top 10.
ReplyDeleteThis is a really fun meet to watch because there are so many kids and they run the thing like a machine. Plus, there was no rain this year!
ReplyDeleteOn the down side, though, a lot of the coaches seemed to put in ridiculously slow times for their kids. The coach on my son's team put actual times that the kids ran the week before. Yet almost every other kid was getting a 30-60 second PR? One of the kids on my son's team had run a 7 flat in the mile last week, and that put him as the "fastest" qualifier in the first heat. The winning time in that heat was around 5:40, and this kid was next to last, even though he improved by 20 seconds from the previous week. 5:40 in the slowest heat? Really?
My son had a similar experience in his heat. He was slotted in a heat of 5:20+ runners based on his 5:23 time a week ago, who might supposedly be aiming for 5:20 or below. He hit 80 seconds flat on the first lap. One would think he'd be in a pack of 80-second milers, right? No. Last place by 10 meters. He slowed down by a couple seconds on lap 2. Now last place by 30 meters. Really? He ended his night by saying he really did not have fun at the meet.
This kind of thing went on in almost every heat. I guess maybe it's OK for many of the kids because almost all the times were sandbagged, but maybe all the coaches could decide as a group how much to sandbag the times so everyone could be better matched?

ReplyDeleteI believe most coaches enter a legitimate time for their athletes in this type of meet so that they have an opportunity to compete for a shirt. Obviously, some totally go overboard with the concept and make a mockery of the meet.
ReplyDeleteWith that said, this is still the early part of the season and we as coaches might not have a time yet for some athletes in certain events. We are left guessing what we think they will run. Sometimes kids will just run way faster than their honestly entered time.
Thanks for turning the results around so quickly. That's what I like about your's and Keith Conning's sites. There is no comparison to the "new" dyestatcal.com. Their content is ridiculous bad mostly national sT&F news, lots of photos but nothing of substance on their site and they are slow as molasses on their results and delivering stories...unless they are Socal related then they make more of an effort. Dyestatcal will never recover from their downward spiral.

ReplyDeleteI believe most times for this meet were sandbagged outrageously. As to why people get satisfaction out of winning a T-shirt they basically cheated to get is beyond my comprehension. As a runner (who ran last night at Dan Gabor)I find pride in doing my best and being competitive in my heat, not just doing well so I can get a T-shirt. I would actually like to improve my running and possibly PR even if it means I come in last. I would rather walk away knowing I was good enough to compete in a faster heat and walk away with a PR rather than a silly T-shirt. Also I did in fact win a t-shirt, but my coach put me in a respectable heat suited for me. I actually had to compete and work hard for this prize.

Anyone else notice that Ortolan from College Park threw down a 4:20 then turned around and dropped a 1:56? He would have won the 800 if he had been fresh like Mathkour. This kid's good!
ReplyDeleteI was seeded first in my heat, pr'd by 9 seconds, outkicked a guy for third place who I overheard say that he didn't pr. That's bogus. I was SEEDED FIRST and I PR'd, which means this guy had to have lied by AT LEAST TEN SECONDS. I finished in 4:46. Ten seconds is a big deal.
ReplyDeleteAwesome last heat of the guys 16. Very close down to the last 100. I always love a race that comes down to the last stretch, especially when it's between that many runners.
ReplyDeleteMy son was seeded at his PR and that put him at the top of his heat. He was bummed. He did get a T-Shirt but he would have much preferred to have been in a faster heat to try and get a faster time. The T-Shirt didn't mean anything to him.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of Ortolan, he kicked from way back in the 1600 to finish 2nd and may have won if he had just started his kick a hair earlier. A great race!

ReplyDeleteThis is a great meet - lots and lots of very competitive races with almost no break between events. Very well run!
ReplyDeleteOn the individual side, Eversol run in the 3200 was the highlight for me. He looked very smooth and ran the second mile largely on his own. My sons were talking with him after the race and he seems like a great kid...like so many in our sport. I hope to see him under 9 at Arcadia. Go NCS!
