More so new runners coming off the couch are going to be way behind. I think that's point WCAL is trying to make.

Common sense also tells us sub-5 boys and sub-6 girls are probably getting some sort coaching from a club, camp, all-comers, parent, self motivation, or maybe they know how to read a book already.

Since we're being ambiguous, I'll just say the "St Francis freshman" knew a bit about running and summer training. He qualified as an XC All-American 22nd in JO's and maybe even TF before entering HS. I also heard his older sister was a good runner, but I know nothing about her. So in short, he is talented and made an impact for the team his freshman year. I'm willing to bet a dozen krispy kreme donuts he didn't sit around waiting for school to start his training.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31292861.post-72012344689456539492016-08-01T07:43:06.441-07:002016-08-01T07:43:06.441-07:00Albert, a slight correction to Isabella Fauria'...Albert, a slight correction to Isabella Fauria's times for this past season. The WCAL restriction really does have an impact on the freshmen class. They can't run with their team and have no way of knowing what is expected of them when they get to HS. That means many of the kids who could otherwise compete for a spot have to run on the frosh or JV team, and hope to impress for an unlikely late season start on Varsity. I know the SF kid had a great coach in MS who has a track record of getting kids ready for the season without overtraining his young athletes. The post-2 week CCS dead period start date for all runners is Aug. 5...but the first day incoming freshmen can train with their new high schools is the day after they graduate from MS, except for the WCAL. All students who will be enrolled in a school can train all summer until their sections 2 week dead period. But the WCAL does not allow frosh to train with the teams at all, until an agreed upon date. Our date is August 10th...I believe those two months do matter, especially for injury prevention and acculturation to a sport that will be new and very different for some. McCrystLE, by the way. #thanksellisisland

@5:30 This year we can have freshmen out on Aug 10, which as I have said is a change from the past.pmccrystlenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31292861.post-71111783165765935002016-07-31T06:35:45.291-07:002016-07-31T06:35:45.291-07:00You would think that the sub 5:00 kids already kno...You would think that the sub 5:00 kids already know something about base training over the summer. Hmmm, how he will handle these new parents. Yep, it's gotta be tough coaching new parents, having to meet their every need and, of course, demand. Maybe he'll attend a clinic this summer on the best methods of handling new parents. I wonder what he'll do about all those kids who just wanna run, too? Oh, for the days parents can just be parents, watch, cheer, encourage, and let the coach do her/his job.

**Albert is correct with respect to contact. One of the arguments that has been given to me is that the administrators don't want incoming freshman to have their first experiences of high school be a potentially negative athletic experience...yeesh! For equity, this rule then applies to all sports. In my research, the WCAL is the only league in the state that has this rule. As you can imagine, I have been fighting against this for the 16 years I have been the head coach at BCP...to no avail! But, this year we have gained a slight victory, in that freshmen can start practicing on August 10th in the WCAL!!!

A ridiculous rule that cannot be justified legitimately, but exists nonetheless. pmccrystlenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31292861.post-46746199378754905392016-07-02T07:17:50.198-07:002016-07-02T07:17:50.198-07:00I have heard about the WCAL rule about freshmen be...I have heard about the WCAL rule about freshmen being excluded until the first day of school.
