There are at least 8 middle school guys who ran the 1600 in under 5:00 this year. 4 are under 4:50: Evan Franco (Ida Price) 4:41.41; Gabe Rosado (Sunnyvale) 4:42.38; Garrett MacQuiddy (Rolling Hills) 4:48.68; and Colin Peattie (RJ Fisher) 4:49.37. Wow, and this does not even account for unlisted times or club times. Does anyone know where the sub 5:00 guys are going to HS next year? They are going to make some significant contributions come fall.
ReplyDeleteI think someone commented on a different post that Isabella Fauria is an incoming frosh for St. Francis, Sac. She will have an immediate impact and will run faster than some of the freshmen boys.
ReplyDeleteIsabella Fauria will be the biggest story in the SJS this fall. She's coming in with a 1600 PR of 4:56 and a 800 of 2:16.30, along with a 3000 PR of 9:56. Can't wait to see what she does once she steps up her training at St Francis.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know where her Sac Elite teammate Madison Denny is going to high school?
I've heard Madison Denny is going to St. Francis. Can anyone confirm that?
ReplyDeleteFrom Athletic.net Santa Clara county top marks 1600
ReplyDelete2. 8 Marco Dal Canto 4:50.57 CA Willow Glen
3. 8 Ben Piekarz 4:53.86 CA Cupertino
4. 8 Aidan Choy-Marshall 4:56.47 CA Willow Glen
1. - Annika Paylor 5:07.93 CA RJ Fisher
2. 7 Minjares Emily 5:21.92 CA Hoover
3. 8 Jana Dawson 5:22.59 CA Bret Harte (San Jose)
Where are all these kids going?
ReplyDeleteNot a freshman, but the Dublin sophomore Scomparin had an outstanding debut season during track, going 4:30/9:49 in the 1600 and the 3200. He has no cross country times, so he will most likely be doing it for the first year
ReplyDeleteI feel a little let down by the comment section on the freshmen this year. Really good crop of kids but no passion for where they are going or how they would impact their new team. Guess we will have to wait for next season.
ReplyDeleteSeth Jeppson of Granada coming in with a 4:55 1600
ReplyDeleteI have seen Madison Denny training with Bella Vista Squad but that might only be because her sisters went there.
ReplyDeleteAnyone know if Paylor is headed to LG?
ReplyDeleteBill, I am a little fuzzy on the rules of training with a team during summer (not in this case in particular but for everyone). Can a school have a training program, mandatory or not, during the summer? Can an incoming freshman, enrolled or not, work out with that team in the summer before stepping foot on campus?
ReplyDeleteNot sure why Madison Denny is part of this discussion, she is going into the 8th grade is an only child and lives in Vacaville, its crazy how fast rumors spread at BV? I am sure her father will follow Fauria where ever she goes but I doubt he will move to Sac to be 2nd or 3rd on St Francis. Vandergrift will probably beat Fauria who is really fast but has not improved tremendously this year. It will be interesting to see how the new St Francis coach will handle these new parents, hopefully better than he did at Del Campo.
ReplyDeleteCoaches are not allowed to contact an athlete before enrolling. Commenting here if they did would not be in good form. I am a coach and have no idea who will show up until they do.
ReplyDeleteYou sound like a parent trying to drum up publicity for your kid, or worse a coach. Please stop.
I think
ReplyDeleteEvan Franco > Branham High BVAL
Garrett MacQuiddy > Westmont High BVAL
No, that was an honest question about off-season training. I do have a kid that runs but he is a junior and needs no promotion. I just wanted to hear from the community about why off-season training with a school team is okay when other sports are not allowed to train unless they are in season. Still have not heard a definitive answer.
ReplyDeleteFrom Jesuit coach, Walt Lange:
ReplyDeleteBasically, the point is that each Section has its own rules regarding the off-season, some sections are a lot stricter than others. Instead of asking the message board what the rules are, the guy can go to all the Section websites and see for himself (click on "governance", then bylaws". What's ok in one section is illegal in others.
Since each section can do what they want, I assume the geniuses at CCS, being hostile to the running sports, would be more punitive than any other to teams and especially the kids. I could be wrong, but only if they don't realize that the CIF would allow greater punishment of the kids. Maybe someone should look up the rules and alert the CCS to any greater power they have to restrict our kids and slow the growth of the sport in any way they can. But let's not worry, I'm sure they would not do the same to football or soccer.
ReplyDeleteit's very simple in CCS. The official practices begin on August 5th. There is a two week dead period before that date. You can contact freshman the first Saturday in June and they can take part in any group runs until the two week dead period. WCAL has it's own rules in regards to freshmen.
ReplyDeleteI have heard about the WCAL rule about freshmen being excluded until the first day of school. Does anyone know why they would do that? Is it a response to problems they had with summer football programs and they just couldn't single out one sport? Seems strange to keep kids away from their new team during a critical training period.
ReplyDeleteto anonymous 7:17 AM: Your guess is correct: the powers-that-be, the presidents of the WCAL schools, along with various AD's over the years, do not want incoming freshman participating in football during the summer. One of the arguments that has been given to me is that the administrators don't want incoming freshman to have their first experiences of high school be a potentially negative athletic experience...yeesh! For equity, this rule then applies to all sports. In my research, the WCAL is the only league in the state that has this rule. As you can imagine, I have been fighting against this for the 16 years I have been the head coach at BCP...to no avail! But, this year we have gained a slight victory, in that freshmen can start practicing on August 10th in the WCAL!!!
ReplyDeleteA ridiculous rule that cannot be justified legitimately, but exists nonetheless.
Stupidity abounds in the CCS and is evidently compounded for freshmen in the WCAL. Who are the people that make these decisions? Do they ever have to face the people they impact? Are these paid positions, do they have other jobs, do they get elected, how do we move them down the road so people who care about our sport and the kids have input and more power?
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing the freshman teams and individuals that the WCAL manages to field every year in spite of all the hadicaps you guys face.
ReplyDeleteBig props to you all in the face of such adversity.
@12:28 yes, without a feeder system like the larger public schools, the WCAL does a great job with their young runners, especially since they don't even know who is showing up until the first day of school. They might start out behind but they do get caught up by the end of the season.
ReplyDeleteJust a FYI,
ReplyDeleteMadison Denny is 12 years old and still in middle school so she won't be attending any High School next year. She has no sisters and has never worked out with Bella Vista.
Signed,
Her Dad :)

Peattie is an 8th grader.
ReplyDelete**@ 11:08 with respect to the comment, "...will be interesting to see how the new St Francis coach will handle these new parents, hopefully better than he did at Del Campo." Hmmm, how he will handle these new parents. Yep, it's gotta be tough coaching new parents, having to meet their every need and, of course, demand. Maybe he'll attend a clinic this summer on the best methods of handling new parents. I wonder what he'll do about all those kids who just wanna run, too? Oh, for the days parents can just be parents, watch, cheer, encourage, and let the coach do her/his job.
ReplyDelete**Albert is correct with respect to contact. Each section has its own bylaws, and it's not difficult to go look them up and read, and usually they apply across the board to all sports, not just running, although there are some exceptions.
**To Madison Denny's dad: That was awesome! Thanks for quelling the rumors.
I'm excited about my three freshman boys that signed up. None have broken a 6 min mile but it's a good turn out for me. Hopefully we can get 4-5 boys and a girl or two to come out at the start of school.
ReplyDeleteThat's how the other half lives boys. You all are spoiled.
5:05 What school and how do you know about these three freshman boys? Have you started practice? If so, you are lucky because WCAL can't even talk to their freshmen kids until the first day if school. By then it is too late to have them contribute to the season in any meaningful way.
ReplyDeleteI don't care to share my school but it's not WCAL. We sent a form home how to sign up for all the sports at the school. FYI, most schools get a list of interested freshman. (I know for a fact some WCAL schools do too). But the start date is Aug 5. Coach McCrystal said freshman can start Aug 10. Don't tell me those 5 days are make or break for an incoming freshman.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how fast all these kids run with no base or direction.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteYou would think that the sub 5:00 kids already know something about base training over the summer. The guys who get hurt by the WCAL summer ban or other schools not working over the summer are the developmental guys who will not show their true form until the end of the XC season.
ReplyDelete@7:20: I think I didn't explain very well the situation to which you allude. The post-2 week CCS dead period start date for all runners is Aug. 5...but the first day incoming freshmen can train with their new high schools is the day after they graduate from MS, except for the WCAL. All students who will be enrolled in a school can train all summer until their sections 2 week dead period. But the WCAL does not allow frosh to train with the teams at all, until an agreed upon date. Our date is August 10th...I believe those two months do matter, especially for injury prevention and acculturation to a sport that will be new and very different for some. McCrystLE, by the way. #thanksellisisland
ReplyDelete@5:30 This year we can have freshmen out on Aug 10, which as I have said is a change from the past.
Are you saying is that a freshman or new runner with less training and experience probably won't run as well as kids that do? You guys in the WCAL are really up against it. The St. Francis kid seemed to have a meaningful impact.
ReplyDelete@8:08 I think anyone involved with distance running would say that less training will lead to worse results than proper training with a team (unless a kid is overtrained and that is the coach's fault). The WCAL restriction really does have an impact on the freshmen class. They can't run with their team and have no way of knowing what is expected of them when they get to HS. That means many of the kids who could otherwise compete for a spot have to run on the frosh or JV team, and hope to impress for an unlikely late season start on Varsity. I know the SF kid had a great coach in MS who has a track record of getting kids ready for the season without overtraining his young athletes.
ReplyDeleteAlbert, a slight correction to Isabella Fauria's times for this past season. She ran a 2:14.77 800m at the San Francisco Distance Classic (college) winning heat #5. She also ran a 4:41.17 1500m (4:59.9 equivalent 1600m), finishing 8th in heat #4 at the same meet, same day.
ReplyDeleteCome on, I think people are just being argumentative.
ReplyDeleteCommon sense tells us that any distance runner freshman or otherwise with little or no summer training will be below their potential the first season. More so new runners coming off the couch are going to be way behind. I think that's point WCAL is trying to make.
Common sense also tells us sub-5 boys and sub-6 girls are probably getting some sort coaching from a club, camp, all-comers, parent, self motivation, or maybe they know how to read a book already.
Since we're being ambiguous, I'll just say the "St Francis freshman" knew a bit about running and summer training. He qualified as an XC All-American 22nd in JO's and maybe even TF before entering HS. I also heard his older sister was a good runner, but I know nothing about her. So in short, he is talented and made an impact for the team his freshman year. I'm willing to bet a dozen krispy kreme donuts he didn't sit around waiting for school to start his training.
Come on, let's be real most freshman don't come out until the first day. The handful that would run are already doing so.
ReplyDeleteCorrect, the majority don't train over the summer.
ReplyDeleteI'm referring to the few that are going to make an immediate impact.
And if you want to make an impact as a freshman on these teams, I'd say you should be a lot more worried about the summer after 5th grade.
ReplyDeleteLooks like all the fast freshman are headed to public schools.
