No doubt. The pandemic definitely did not slow them down at all and you can make a case that it's been a major positive for them.

Hard to beat the 2017 Great Oak SS Prelims where 5 girls broke 5-minutes

The health guidelines state you are only allowed to compete in your county or one touching it. Out of state competition is not allowed. This is for club, HS, unattached individuals, everyone. Is CIF going to address this or they just like whatever now?

What are you talking about. These are guidelines. They aren't mandates. They are safety guidelines. The CDC also has guidelines that say you should not drink alcohol, but it isn't illegal. Also, why do you care?

It's high school sports and some kid's dream. If that's not important enough to disregard safety guidelines meant to stem a global pandemic that's killing millions, then I don't know what is. We all have our priorities.

@7:06. It’s also currently against CIF rules to compete out of state. I guess if you’re good you don’t need to follow the rules?

Anonymous said...

@8:04 please send me the link to where is states that is against CIF rules to go out of state and compete unattached. Make sure that what you send says what the consequence is for an athlete who does this.

Does a loss of respect from many within the coaching community count as consequences?

The CIF doesn't say an unattached athlete can't travel; the CIF only has jurisdiction over California HS sports. And, the CIF has to work within whatever the CDPH says are the parameters (Here is the link to the most current document, which I must wade through night and day as I try to figure out what I can and cannot do safely and legally as a track coach: https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/COVID-19/outdoor-indoor-recreational-sports.aspx?fbclid=IwAR2r-Rqu1WE5Awsm0qAooz1pPM7BRpBFIMpbI9NBGtGpuJFZTbLMd7nbNzQ )

Here is the wording, from that CDPH document linked above, which pertains to out-of-state competition. This was updated most recently on March 4th, so it is still the official word...for High Schools! Club teams can do whatever they want, of course. There is no mention of penalty:

General Requirements for All Sports:
Irrespective of setting (outdoor or indoor) case rate or sport played, the following general guidance requirements must be adhered to at all times:

Face coverings to be worn when not participating in the activity (e.g., on the sidelines).
Face coverings to be worn by coaches, support staff and observers at all times, and in compliance with the CDPH Guidance for the Use of Face Coverings.
Observers maintain at least 6 feet from non-household members.
No sharing of drink bottles and other personal items and equipment.
Mixing with other households prior to and post any practice or competition must strictly adhere to current gathering guidance.
Limit indoor sports activities (practice, conditioning) to comply with capacity limits (which shall include all athletes, coaches, and observers) indicated in current CDPH Gym & Fitness Center Guidance Capacity.
Associated indoor activities for the team (e.g., dinners, film study) are prohibited if engaged in competition given evidence that transmission is more likely to occur in these indoor higher risk settings.
Teams must not participate in out-of-state games and tournaments; several multistate outbreaks have been reported around the nation, including California residents.

Clubs CAN NOT do what they want and still fall under the CDPH guidelines. If you are in a county like Santa Clara you can be fined, as they have with many businesses. Will they police individuals? Probably not. But that doesn’t make it ok.

Clearly these coaches are doing whatever they want. I know many who went against their principal, district, county health code because they thought the virus isn’t real. I know others who have opted out this season because they live with someone who is high risk. It is a personal choice.

For a minute I thought I was reading the wrong thread (Elite CCS Distance runners...), but anyway will be great to see some of these HS kids back in action after missing a year.

I especially like the 2019 CCS 800M cover photo Albert chose for the article :) Too bad no HS runners at the Stanford Invite this weekend (Garrett will be there for Cal, he's had one 800/1:50.23 and 1500/3:47.68 so far) Great to have college back running safely (but still no fans and smaller meets). I'm looking forward to getting to watch some of our current elite HS runners back on the track as well soon!

You didn't have to read far considering the first comment was honking the recent exploits of Q'bery Park. Much respect to your kid for having to sit on the sidelines and watch his likely State 800M tile disappear.

@Patrick: The CDPH rules that you cite cover all organized youth sports, including club activities, and are not just limited to high school programs. I don't think anything will come of it, but Newbury Park is breaching the rules by organizing and running in these meets in Arizona.

From the Summary at the beginning: "The guidance applies to all organized youth sports and recreation— including school- and community-sponsored programs, and privately-organized clubs and leagues — and adult recreational sports (hereafter youth and adult sports)."

Wow lots to cover here (including your nose and mouth)...

@3/31 4:49PM - Not to say anything about Brosnan's coaching, but he's a well-known trumper and won't wear a mask during his Sundown Series Meets. So that says a lot.

@3/30 7:08PM - incorrect, there is someone named John Lester who would've easily won State 800M. Garrett is awesome but not against one of the fastest NorCal 800M runners in the State, if not the country. Please do your research.

@Coach McCrystle - the most respected coach and always does things by the book as well as being creative to help his boys. Thank you.

@3/28 4:08PM - agreed on NBP, very impressive however, horrific at role modeling doing things safely which Brosnan can do but chooses not to due to his political affiliation.

@ 6:19 IDK. Pretty sure MacQuiddy was the top NorCal 800M returner from the 2019 State meet, and judging from their times at the State meet in Cross Country, I'm not sure I see your guy beating Garrett in a normal track season. I guess we all have our opinions.

Anonymous said...

@7:24 I think we an all agree we'd like to have been able to see that race..

Anonymous said...

I agree 100%. There would have been an epic throwdown for that sombrero.

Anonymous said...

@7:24 - clearly you have no idea who John Lester is...if you don't look him up...John ran a 1:48.26 in mid June last summer...MacQuiddy can't even run that right now...Again no disrespect to GMac, awesome kid and athlete.

@8:30 - that I can agree on...

pmccrystle said...

@4:49--absolutely, though individuals and clubs are rarely held accountable to these rules because CDPH officials have other, bigger fish to fry, like getting shots in peoples' arms, but HS's have the CIF monitoring them (thank heavens), but sadly clubs are not constrained by organizations like the CIF; they are honor-bound and must act according to their own codes...which, as we all know, are unfortunately often more aligned with personal interests and not the interests of our society...one would think that being a patriot would involve making decisions that resulted in equity and justice for all the citizens of one's 'patria', not just individuals; sadly, that is not, IMO, the USA right now. Imagine if everyone who spouts 'patriotism' as their be-all and end-all had made the decision a year ago to show a little discipline, a little responsibility, a little sacrifice in the name of the common good...where would we all be right now? I'd be sitting in the stands at Dublin HS shooting the mierda with Albert and watching all comers try to catch John Lester!!!! Sorry...this is all piling up as we move closer to losing another track season, and if we have a third surge we could lose another CC season...and a little civic responsibility would sure help limit those chances. Time to log on and teach! Woo-Hoo!

Wow, so I got notified of this thread from three different sources this morning. This board seems to be more and more like Let’s Run (this is not a compliment). I love anonymous folks throwing shade at people, so courageous.

Patrick - thanks for your continually grounded voice. Clearly we all would have been a better place if COVID-19 did not become a political issue.

Mr Mac - love that all you did was continue to stay involved and supportive of the HS athletes and your kid becomes fodder for anon vultures. Especially funny when people point out his current PR with no concept of his training focus, goals and race strategies.

Brosnan may have organized the races but a lot of coaches from CA took their kids to the races in spite of guidelines. Now those kids are the ones getting all the press as nobody else has times.

This year there are loads of talented kids and I wish there was going to be state meet. I am hopeful there will be CCS. It is nice that Albert features some kids to provide some sort of publicity to raise awareness.

As the guy who was lucky enough to be one of Garrett’s coaches all I can say is that I liked his chances to build into a solid 800m 3200m double at state. Lester is a fantastic runner but I know that Chase Gordon (the fastest returning runner) G-Mac and a load of other athletes would be there to race. The State 800m isn’t about who can run the fastest 800m, it is who can run the fastest 800m the day after probably running sub 1:54. Again, no doubt John, Chase and Garrett are all in the conversation but there is no point in being negative on these kids. They all had a great chance. Now all we can do is cheer for them in their current endeavors.

Mask up, race in CA and be kind.

@6:19: How do you knock NBP Coach and praise Lester in the same comment? Are you not aware that he was taken to AZ by his High School coach. Just listen to any of the videos or podcasts his coach did after the race. Sure they think they were safe but they broke the same rules you are upset with NBP coach one. Maybe you should "do your research". Pick a side dude.

Coach Ernst - LR is awesome. Where else are supposed to go to rip on high school kids anomalously?

WOW, and I just started this by saying the NP runners had one of the most impressive one day times by a team in my lifetime. Chill.

I will say it's pretty sad to see coaches "skirting" the rules/guidelines/mandates or whatever the great state of California wants to call it (Thanks Mr. Newsome for the clarity!), in order to have their athletes run some fast times. The problem with these "Rogue" coaches is that they're not playing by the same rules as many of their counterparts are. Do we all 100% agree with these "suggested" and or "mandated" regulations? No! but that doesn't give anyone the right to forge their own path and disallow what the state recommends according to their own beliefs. Right, wrong, or indifferent it is what it is. You live in California, deal with it! If you don't like the "Rules" and or "Guidelines" no matter how senseless you think they are then move to a state that fits your agenda. EVERYONE must abide by the same guidelines. Paraphrasing Coach McCrystle, "Let's use a little civic responsibility".

Hope to see all of our amazing young athletes together on the track and on the XC trails soon!

No more county requirements for competition. However NCS already said no post season. Most districts in CCS are doing their own thing. Many leagues not even competing. So either CCS is just a few schools or doesn’t happen. Thoughts?

Ps. New guidelines still say no out of state competition btw.
