I want to qualify my athlete to the state meet. He ran 4:20 last year and will need to run 4:15 to give himself a shot in CCS. Every race this season needs to be a learning opportunity but my main focus is making him a better tactician while racing under pressure.

Best of luck to your athlete. I will say that perhaps a decade ago, sub 4:20 would get you to the state meet. Now in CCS, sub 4:20 will get you into the final and anybody that makes the final will have a shot to qualify to the state meet.

For those of you that remember Menlo Atherton's George Baier, here is my interview with him from 2012. He was the first alternate to make the final and one runner who qualified scratched, George got the opportunity to race in the final. A video of the race is included in the link below.

@6:24 the state meet at large time is set at 4:14.90 so your athlete’s goal is right on target to get himself to Fresno. This could be a year where the CCS sends 4, 5, more (?) to the state meet with so many fast guys returning. It remains to be seen if the CCS 1600 race will be tactical, in that case only the top 3 would go, or if everyone runs full out, in which case there are at least 5 guys who can go under the at large time.

Just looking back at previous years, the distance races in CCS have been very honest in terms of fast times. I am sure it will be the same with the competitors returning for 2019.
