Santa Cruz coach, Greg Brock

The following was posted on the Stanford XC/TF Instagram account. One of the gentlemen posted is current Santa Cruz coach, Greg Brock (upper right with glasses). You can also check out my interview with Greg that I did with him in 2010 at this LINK.

Great photo. If anyone is interested in an entertaining book about Stanford cross country in the late 60s and early 70s, check out "Jock: A Memoir of the Counterculture" by Robert Coe who was a pretty good Stanford runner then. Among other things, I enjoyed reading about beloved distance coach Marshall Clark, who also coached HS locally around here for many years, and the contrast with head coach Payton Jordan, who was rigid and disliked. To be fair, the book is heavily about running but also weaves in campus life, the peace movement, student activism, etc., which I enjoyed reading about but maybe not everyone on here would. Amazon has a good description of it.

I didn't realize Greg Brock ran for Stanford which made try to recall all the incredible high school coaching lineage from Stanford: Frank (Central Catholic), Atkinson (Mira Costa), Fullove (Castilleja), Plummer (ex Gunn), McCryslie (Bellarmine). I wonder how many others are out there?

Rod Berry who coached at Sir Francis Drake also went to Stanford. You can check out my interview with him here:
