Not so bold predictions: Strangio wins Boys D1, Kackley wins Girls D1, Boys D2 race is most competitive of the day (BV will win, but state meet spots 2 and 3 will be fought over by Rocklin, Whitney and Vacaville who will be separated by less than 15 points). St. Francis puts all 5 scorers in top 10 of Girls D2 race. Girls D3 - Chamberlain continues her stellar freshman season.

Bold: Vacaville freshman Steplight wins Boys D2 race. Isabella Fauria completes her comeback by winning D2 title.

Owen MacKenzie is on the CCS start list. Hope he's fully healthy and runs well!

Albert Caruana said...

If he is on the start list, that means there is a pretty good chance that he competes.

Anonymous said...

If you don't run in at least 1/2 of your league races, is there a process to be eligible for the CCS race? What is that process?

Albert Caruana said...

You can petition to be eligible for the league final by asking for an exemption due to injury. If he was cleared for his league final, then he is eligible for CCS.

Anonymous said...

To clarify it needs to be a non sports related injury. Medical records need to be provided. And voted on before the league final race. If all this happened and the CCS office approves he is eligible.

If he competed in half the league races and his team made it no waiver is needed.

Albert Caruana said...

The non sports related injury reference has to do with hardship appeals to CCS. If you are cleared to participate at your league final meet then you are cleared to compete at CCS.

I was the one who posted earlier about Owen being on the start list. I assume if he's on the list, he's running, but my comment was directed towards hoping that he's healthy enough to run at or near his high level! As for eligibility, Owen walked or jogged two of the SCVAL meets, one was a 5km at Baylands in 43 minutes and the other was Crystal in 24 minutes, and I assume he and his coaches did this so that officially he has participated in 1/2 his league meets. But even if he's not 100% yet, Los Altos probably qualifies for state so he will have another 2 weeks to try to get there.

Most of the CCS races are somewhat predictable. However, the CCS D1 boys race should be interesting. Obviously Bellermine is going to win but as for the 2nd and 3rd spots its kinda unpredictable. If Owen Mackenzie is at full health (and will actually run) then Los Altos will qualify for sure. If not then Los Altos will remain a favorite, but will have a lot more close competition. Paly, Carlmont, Evergreen Valley, and Homestead will all be in the running for third (or possibly 2nd).

Albert, there is only a CCS hardship rule. You may be cleared to participate in your league meet but if you have not met the 50% rule you’re still ineligible to compete at CCS. Personally, I find there is a major ethical problem with a rule that requires injured athletes to participate. Personally, I find there is a major ethical problem with a rule that requires injured athletes to participate to be eligible to compete for their TEAM at CCS. While this rule has good intentions I do hope CCS takes a look at making an athlete walk a cross country race to be eligible for the post season. I mean what’s the point of that?

Anonymous said...

I agree, you shouldn’t have to walk a race in order to be eligible. It’s a team sport. The coach should be able to start any 7 regardless of how many meets someone ran. I hope Owen is ready to go. I hate to see anyone that talented miss his senior year. If he is not ready, he does not have to run in the CCS to run at state with his team. Good luck to him and everyone running on Saturday.

Anyone know what happens if it is too smoky to run CCS at Crystal tomorrow? Is there a makeup date? What if it’s too smoky to run between now and state?

Hank said...

Here's an interesting thought, could Owen have passed on all of the SCVAL meets and the CCS meet and still be able to run the State meet? Is there a State rule that says he had to have competed in a previous meet?

I hope Dan is right about Kellen Steplight. It would be fun to see a freshman win d2. Anyone know whether a freshman boy has done that before?

Albert Caruana said...

If an athlete was eligible to compete at their league final, they can compete at CCS whether they ran or not at their league championship meet.

There are no such rules in NCS. Whoever wants to compete is welcome.

Once you get to the state meet as a team, a team can qualify and run whoever they want. The majority of the time, the team will run the 7 runners that ran at their section meet.

Dan said...

Brian, I expect Steplight to qualify for state if his team doesn't get top 3. Obviously returning champion Damian King has to be the favorite in the D2 race, but anything can happen. It will be interesting because King seems to like to be a front runner, take it out hard and then hang on. Steplight has sub-2:00 800 speed, so if he can stay within striking distance...

I will add one more prediction. Jesuit will go below their 2015 edition's team time of 82:14. That was a CIF D1 podium team that missed an auto NXN qualification by one spot.

Got to hand it to the CCS boards past and present for having onerous rules for runners that nobody else has.

When does the decision get made about continuing with CCS or postponing it due to poor air quality? For what it's worth, airnow.gov shows "unhealthy" air in Belmont right now but forecasted to improve to "moderate" tomorrow.

Anonymous said...

Given the air quality, is the CCS race still on for tomorrow?

Albert Caruana said...

I would say that most rules in CCS are the same across all sports and are not necessarily cross country centered.

Anonymous said...

You can compete in league meet and not be eligible for CCS. I have seen it happen. 50% rule is from swimming.

CCS Season Long League Play
In individual sports, (swimming, track & field, cross country, tennis, golf, gymnastics, badminton,
wrestling), a student athlete must compete in at least ½ of the regularly-scheduled league meets in order
to participate in the CCS playoffs in that sport. The specific qualification standards outlined in the CCS
bylaws for each of these sports must be met in addition to this general minimum participation standard.
Exceptions to this rule may be considered by the league ONLY
o if there is a serious medical condition or hardship that is beyond the student’s control and which
clearly and solely causes their lack of participation in a minimum of ½ of their regularly-scheduled
league contests OR
o if the student has corrected a scholastic ineligibility in the most recent grading period which
occurs after the first half of the league season is complete and which directly and solely causes
their lack of participation in a minimum of ½ of their regularly-scheduled league contests.
o if through internal team competition and ladder movement an athlete has not had the opportunity
to participate in ½ the regular-scheduled league contests.

Just for clarity, the Dan who posted about Kellen Steplight winning is not me, his dad. Although we both share the great name of "Dan". Ha Ha! Kellen is ready to go and just hoping to qualify. He has 3 more years to try and win the sections.

Anonymous said...

FYI- Per the SJS Website, sections have been moved to 11/17 because of air quality.

Dan said...

No, I am not Kellen's dad. I cover XC and Track for MileSplit and we were throwing out some bold predictions. Obviously no pressure intended as there are many fine athletes in the field. He has had a great freshman season and qualifying for the state meet (as a team or individual) would be a great accomplishment, good luck to Kellen and all the athletes running tomorrow.

With the CCS rescheduling their XC meet, I wonder if SJS is considering rescheduling theirs? The AQI forecast is 150+ tomorrow in Folsom.

On a more positive note, the NCAA West Regional races this morning at Haggin Oaks were very exciting. Nice to see all the current St Francis XC team cheering on their alumni !

Did St. Francis not have school today?

SF always takes off school the day before CCS but they can’t take off Monday so let’s all hope for more smoke.

Here’s my SJS bold prediction: 1 team each from Div 1 thru 4 will have both boys and girls team qualify for state.

I don’t know how bold these are but I’ll take a crack at predicting SJS division teams and individual winners:
D1B: Jesuit, Davis (Gregoria for 3rd but only 2 qualify) Matt Strangio sub-15:40 (assuming close to ideal conditions)
D1G: Davis, Cosumnes Oaks, Oak Ridge A or C Mitchell sub 18:30
D2B: Whitney, Bella Vista, Rocklin; Damian King sub-16 (tuffest team race #1a)
D2G: St Fr, Whitney, Vacaville; Isabella Fauria sub-18:10
D3B: Nevada Union, Del Oro, Merced; Garrett Gough sub-15:30 ((tuffest team race #1b)
D3G: VDL, Del Oro, El Camino; Riley Chamberlain sub-18
D4B: Placer, Christian Bros, Calaveras; Jesus Guerra-Reyes sub-16
D4G: El Dorado (low score of the day), Placer (tb), Hughson (only 2 teams advance to state); Madison Hutchings sub-19:15
D5B: Capital Christian, Waterford, Woodland Christian (only 2 teams advance); Jaydon Spires (Tioga) sub-17:20
D5G: Western Sierra, Buckingham, Foresthill (only 2 teams advance); Amber Jackson (Forest Lake Chr) sub-19:10

SJS

D1
Madison Kackley and Natalie Harper will battle for the win with Mavleen Mann third and fill in 4th and 5th with the Davis Girls.
Teams advancing Davis, Gregori & Cosumnes Oaks (Maybe Oakridge)
One word, Strangio

D2
Cate Joaquin will upset Isabella Fauria in Girls D2
Neither Steplight nor King will win SJS D2, Simon Stubbert will.

D3
Riley Chamberlain obviously wins

D4 & D5
Who cares; and I am not saying that to be mean.
XC is a team sport and I get that and teams should compete against other teams with similar enrollments, however, individuals advancing to state should be selected from the pool of everyone in all divisions. There is no disadvantage to an individual who goes to a school with a lower enrollment. The top 25 times (not already on advancing teams) should qualify individuals to the state meet regardless of their division. It's highly unfair that a kid wins a D5 state championship running slower than a bunch of D1 runners that didn't even make the podium.

Anonymous said...

In continuation of my previous post that I posted too early:
Too many kids are left behind under the current 5 from each division system. It leaves a bad taste in your mouth when you have kids as individual qualifiers to state running a minute slower than others who didn't make the cut in D1 or D2. That may be fair for teams, but it's 100% unfair for individuals and there is no rationale for it that makes any sense.

Anonymous said...

@10:42am, so what would your suggestion be?

Anonymous said...

@3:59 The SJS should change qualification for individuals to:
Qualify to the state meet, runners with the 25 fastest times at sections from all divisions and not already on a qualifying team. Simple. You get the 25 fastest individuals in the section and you still get the top teams in each division. Team qualification remains the same and is based on division as it should be. If you are in D3 and one of the 25 fastest in all divisions, you earned your ticket and you still run the D3 race at state. Runners still run in the division race they qualify out of.

It should be the same as track. Advance in your division at subsections as it is now, then to make it to state, you have to be the fastest without respect to division at sections.

In the 2017 girls D5 varsity race, the 5th individual state meet qualifier ran 21:50.6. There were 175 girls that ran faster than that, most of which did not make it to state. I would love for anyone to explain how it makes sense that the 21:50.6 makes it but the 19:12.6, a full 2:38 faster, had to stay home. So, your school only has 600 people there, great, your team is D5 as it should be, but if your team doesn't make it and you have to qualify on your own, why shouldn't you have to run as fast as everyone else to get there?

Anonymous 10:33

There is History with D4-D5 Individuals and Teams competing very well against larger schools and ending up on top.

Anonymous said...

@10:33 good reasoning. Biggest problem is more D1 and 2 individuals would be going to state and those races would get too large, especially if you open that change to all sections. That’s the only reason it’s not going to happen, even if more fair to the kids.

Anonymous said...

There’s no reason to have individual qualifying a team divisional race. All individual qualifiers should be in one race at state.

Anonymous said...

Far and away the biggest problem with just taking the 25 fastest times is that the kids are running in different races and don't have head-to-head competition. If two kids have the exact same time for the 25th spot but were in different races, who goes?

Furthermore, the race conditions can vary wildly over the course of a day. Can you imagine the moaning if a D1 race is run in such worse conditions that none of the individuals are in the top 25 times overall?

Anonymous said...

@10:33AM on 12Nov - I understand some of your reasoning, but I disagree with the blanket statement that "...There is no disadvantage to an individual who goes to a school with a lower enrollment." There are certainly training advantages in a large school program where you are much more likely to have better quality/quantity of teammates with whom to train. Individual talent/dedication certainly matters, but don't think performance can't be helped by better training partners.
