Looks like Bell rested the B team for this week's WCAL meet. Can Saint Francis A, who just ran Stanford, out run Bellarmine's B team?

Makes you wonder about the CCS 50% rule. Seems dumb to have varsity kids jog in the JV division just to meet the letter of the law. Perhaps that rule should be applied to individual qualifiers only so team's can race when they want.

What is the 50% rule and how does it apply to WCAL?

@3:22 head to head SF is only 10 points behind Bell (without a key varsity runner). Because the SF guys are young, that gap may close a little before the end of the year. Given that, SF would beat the Bell B team handily. Should be fun to see both teams at full strength at a WCAL meet later in the season.

Not sure where you are getting 10 points from. Bell beat SF by 55 at Stanford. Bell had two in before SF #1 plus won every head to head match. And as you said that's Bell missing a top runner. They could have 3 in before SF #1. It's not really that close.

The 50% rule is for all CCS. You must run in half your league meets to compete in the post season. So Bellarmine which will compete in Mt. Sac will have to have their varsity guys jog either this meet or WCAL #2.

It's a problem everywhere. Homestead had 17-18 min girls jog 27 min 3 milers just to be in compliance. If this is what coaches are doing it seems like a problem with the rule.

@5:31 Athletic.net virtual meet at 5k shows a 10 point spread if you limit it to WCAL teams only. Of course the spread is greater in a large invitational like Stanford but that was not the question. When both teams comprise places 1-12, and 14, 15 (only 1 other WCAL runner would come in at 13) then the scores naturally are a lot closer - approximately 10 points. The Bell B team would not beat a much improved, young (thanks 5:37 for 2015 times) SF team that has taken more than a few seconds off their team records in the past 12 months. Nod goes to Bell this year for sure, but let's not pretend that SF is losing to the Bell B team.

Sal, just to put a period on your take, the data from 2015 shows Skahill next to last in both scenarios but at Stanford he ran 15:57.9, which was faster than 4 of the Bell seeded runners. Every year is different and it is definately different for a young team like SF. I'm pulling for Bell to kick butt in D1 at state so we have a CCS team on the podium. I also want SF to do well at state and to push the other WCAL teams so the league can be the best it can.

Albert,

I realize that this probably isn't the place to post this question, but I'm not on Twitter, so can't respond directly to the tweet in question. One of your tweets from earlier today listed the 3 fastest girls times (all-time) at Stanford (for this course), but Cate Ratliff's time of 16:49 from 2015 wasn't listed (appears to be 2nd fastest after Fiona O'Keeffe's 16:32). I think Cate ran in the D4 race last fall and not the seeded race, so maybe that's why it's not on your list?

Albert Caruana said...

You are right. Cate is the second fastest girl on Stanford course. Total miss on my part.

Is the current Stanford course considered fast or slow? how is it compared to Woodward Park and Mt. Sac?

Albert Caruana said...

From looking at past results, I would say that most of the top flight kids run about the same time if not a little slower at Woodward Park compared to their Stanford time earlier in the season. I think the Stanford course if faster but kids are fitter later in the year. The other factor is that the state meet goes out so fast that some kids ending up blowing up (not literally of course).

Hi Albert, I put together a list of rankings for the CIF-SJS. Are you interested in this? If so, is this the most appropriate place to send it?

Albert Caruana said...

Gary, yes I am very interested in your list. Please email it to me at albertjcaruana@gmail.com and I will post it on the front page (giving you full credit of course).

Thank you very much.

Albert, Just an FYI that Miramonte is D4 this year, not D3.

Albert Caruana said...

I do know that Miramonte is in Division IV this year but could have made a mistake in my post. I will get that fixed.

Thank you for pointing that out.

Sal said...

Hate to say this but not only can the SF "A" team beat the Bell "B" team, evidently SF's "B" team can beat them too. I'm told it happened at the WCAL meet today. Hope telling the truth is not too "fan boy."

Posted with me editing comment.

Though Bell was third in the freshman boys. First time they've lost that in a long time. Saint Francis has done a good job attracting local talent.
