NorCal runners take top 2 spots at Woodbridge boys Sweepstakes race

Outstanding as they (Luis Grijalva Armijo and Cooper Teare St. Joseph Notre Dame-photo courtesy of ca.milesplit.com correspondent Ben Crawford) are the only 2 runners in field to break 14 minute mark. Reed Brown, 3rd place finisher, ran 4:04.73 on the track last spring.

Also Kiera Marshall St. Joseph Notre Dame finished in 14th in 16:49.9, Elana Kamas Homestead 17:10.72, Rylee Bowen Sonoma Academy 17:27.6, Kaitlyn Williams Homestead 17:46.53, Kate Bowen Sonoma Academy 17:47.0 all in Sweepstakes girls race.

Outside of the Sweepstakes races, Sarah Chaves El Camino (SJS) 17:16.4 and teammate Alyssa Barnes 17:47.1.

You can also check out the times and team scores for all competing Redwood Empire runners that includes a large contingent from Maria Carrillo thanks to Jim Crowhurst at this LINK.

Sarah Chaves won Varsity Red with a 17:17 and her team mate Alyssa Barnes was 5th with 17:47, two of the top three rank SJS 3 miles girls this season, no mention of them again? Chaves has run faster than Fauria....

Thank you for your post and making note of those two girls. I will add them right now to the list. I am one person and do not know every single runner out there (yet!) so any help from all the eyes out there at meets is very helpful.

Comparing Chaves or Barnes on the Woodbridge course to Fauria on the Newhall Park course is not apple to apples. The elevation profile of Newhall Park is very different. Comparing the course records would further indicate that Newhall park runs slower by some 40 seconds. Looking at times alone in XC isn't productive, especially when determining who had the best performance. Who you beat, where you beat them and by how much is much more probative than just raw time. As talented as they are, to claim that Chaves and Barnes are "two of the top three" ranked girls in the SJS might be a slight exaggeration, even from their coach and parent. Talented? Absolutely! Two of the top 3 in SJS? I think there are some girls from Davis, St. Francis, Oakmont, etc, that might have something to say about that.

So, I'll try again at a post since apparently my first one was rejected.
My point is simple, this thread is about NorCal runners and the boys sweepstakes race. Albert added some standouts from the girls sweepstakes race as well. I think it's great if people add others that they think had a great performance from the other races, but what I found objectionable was the call out of Fauria. This thread didn't even mention Fauria, she didn't run at Woodbridge and any comparison of times from Woodbridge to Newhall Park are specious at best.

I think that it would actually be a good debate, in the thread that asks about the best performance of the week, to compare performances on different courses, but throwing in the last line: " Chaves has run faster than Fauria," in a thread that doesn't even mention Fauria, says a lot and what it says is not flattering to the one who said it.

Just my opinion, your mileage may vary.

I hope this one get's posted! :)

Your posts were not rejected. I just got to approving them and they are both up now.

Rankings for the most part are very subjective. Even when runners race against each other, the final tally is not usually lopsided and then you have to decide who is better.

Chaves will race Fauria at the Capital Cross challenge. Should be fun...

Great moves, Cooper! Keep it up, I'm proud of you!

This is why we need an open division at state. Let the best teams and individuals race each other!

Clearly not comfortable pitting girls against each other, which serves nobody. Since I was at Newhall Park on Saturday I will say this, Sydney Vandergrift, Soifia Castiglioni, Olivia O'Keeffe, Cassidy Haskell and Glennis Murphy are just a few of the girls Fauria finished ahead of on Saturday, that was what impressed me. Taking absolutely nothing away from anyone who ran Woodbridge, that is a track meet, flat as a pancake, with portions on putting green smooth grass and even astro turf. Grijalva went under 14 minutes there (4:39 pace) and as talented as he is, he got beat by Vernau at the Lagoon Valley Classic by 20 seconds. So is his sub-14, beating Cooper Teare more impressive than Vernau running from the front with no competition and coming within 2 seconds of the all time record at Newhall? It's a fun discussion, but at the end of the day, I am looking at head to head competitions at places like Stanford in less than 2 weeks and even more so, Clovis in 3 when you will throw in the vast majority of teams/individuals who hope to make noise at the State Championships.

Some very excellent points.

From experience, I would say that the top runners will defeat each other throughout the season and except for super elite runners like German Fernandez and Fiona O'Keeffe, you usually don't see a consistent pattern. As was mentioned above, there are multiple factors like courses, training cycles and just "you don't feel right that day".

When it comes to individual and team rankings, I can make an educated guess on who is better than who but the reality each race is unique and anything can happen.

Yes, let's not pit girl against girl. This is supposed to be fun. Competitive too, sure, but these kids already put enough pressure on themselves. Just sit back and watch. Remark on remarkable performances, and let the running do the talking. It's silly to sort on athletic.net by race distance and think that = THE top 3 runners in XC. There have been a ton of great performances already this season, but we've two months to go until State. Enjoy the ride, and be kind. Peace.

Albert, is there a way to view Milesplit rankings by race distance whilst eliminating performances from certain races? I'd like to see how things look without Woodbridge.

Mark this issue as resolved per Saturday at the Capital Cross Challenge.
