Northern California, pick the state meet qualifiers in each event, in every section

Central Coast Section

Sac-Joaquin Section

North Coast Section

Sac-Joaquin Section

San Francisco Section

Oakland Section

I will add additional information throughout the week so for now, let's get the conversation started. Who are the favorites? Who will score the biggest upset? Who are the state meet contenders? What race in what section will be the most competitive? What is the best event and in what section in Northern California?

I think the men's 1,600 at SJS Masters is going to be interesting since the fastest runners all (in my opinion) lean towards the 3,200. Vernau and Kurdy for sure and I am pretty sure Grijalva as well. With Ambriz getting DQ'd at Sections, the 16 will be wide open. I believe the three I named above will focus on the 3,200 and will be the qualifiers. In the 1,600 I am guessing that will leave Clusserath, Browning, Borowsky and Jones to fight it out for the three spots. All 3 of the 3,200 runners I named are capable of uncorking a dream race at state, my gut says that one or two of them will. I don't see the 1,600 being a strong event for SJS at the state meet.

Why did Ambriz get dq'ed?

Obstruction. I watched Coach Lange's video and it seemed like on the last lap, last turn (he forced Borowsky in to Lane 0), that was the only thing I could see. I've seen him run 4 or 5 times this year and he clearly loves to go to the front and not let anybody pass him. And by not let anybody pass him, I am not suggesting he plays dirty, he's just seems to be at his best when he runs from the front.

In SJS girls 800M, I'm calling the upset. Cathilyn McIntosh from Del Oro will win in 2:11. She has 55 second 400M speed and has recently emerged as an 800 runner.

How is that an upset, she is the top seeded runner from subsections? I say Ariane Ardnt wins the 800. She did what she had to do to qualify, McIntosh's average 800 hovers around 2:20. Ardnt will win with a 2:09, Okeefe 2nd 2:10, Meade 3rd 2:13. Derry (would have been 4th) will skip the 800 and try to fight off Chaves for a state spot. Chaves will be 3rd in the 1600, that will upset a lot of top seeded seniors.

@ 9:07PM - on paper, I would agree with you that Arndt should win the 800. However, she may be running the 4x100, 4x400, and 400M also -- whereas McIntosh is only running the 800M. That could play a factor. It will be interesting to see. Arndt has the experience (Senior), but who knows. Maybe McIntosh (sophomore) surprises here. She qualified for state in the 400M as a freshman but her coaches had her concentrate on 800M this year. Let's see if that strategy pays off.

Girls SJS 800 is playing out as expected, Ardnt scratched the 400, BV girls all scratched the 800 for fears of the freshmen Chaves, Okeefe and Ardnt cruised an easy 2:15 just to qualify. I would like to see McIntosh move on, but I think she went too hard in the prelims, should have cruised to advance. I would like to see the Davis girls get off the podium but I doubt it, It will be fun to watch.

It will be fun to see SJS girls 800. McIntosh doesn't have the experience but she's also a bit of an unknown when it comes to how fast she can go. She went 2:12 at Sacramento MoC - but she'll likely need to go faster to qualify for state today. My prediction is Arndt, McIntosh and O'Keefe advance -- with any of them with a chance to win the SJS title.
