National track and field leaders (Rylee Bowen and Elena Bruckner) from Bay Area go to Penn Relays

As reported by SF GATE and maxpreps writer Mitch Stephens, both Rylee Bowen, Sonoma Academy and Elena Bruckner, Valley Christian SJ will compete at the upcoming, prestigious Penn Relays (April 28-30). Both have made good use of their frequent miles so far this season with trips to APU Distance Meet of Champions (Bowen), Texas Relays (both), Arcadia Invitational (both) and Mt. SAC Relays (Bowen).

You can read the article in today's SF Chronicle at this LINK. (also Cooper Teare, St. Joseph Notre Dame mention).

Sonoma Academy must have a great travel budget.

The school as opposed to just the athletic department may be footing the bills for all these long distance meets. Sometimes the athlete's family may have to help with the costs as well.

I doubt the school is paying for transportation to all of the out of state meets but are they sending a coach? At CA meets, an official coach from the school is required to accompany the athlete.

At our school the parents pay for the athletes. Sharing lodging and food cost. This is a big experience for an athlete. Totally worth it. That's why my car is 10 years old.

Any thoughts on Rylee possibly over racing?...I guess we won't know until the end of the season

It's a good question. The truth is you just never know what athletes can handle and you will get different results by 3-4 athletes with the same talent doing the same schedule. If you look at the amount of races, I know there are other athletes racing many more races than her. The difference might be in the caliber of competition at each meet.

Bowen is an independent racing in a Sonoma Academy jersey. It doesn't seem like she's over racing but all the travel does get tiring. Since the season has started she has raced in NYC, Texas, SoCal twice and next Philly. I'm sure they plan to race her post NCS/State too.

She qualified for the Brooks PR meet (mile) with a victory at the Mt. SAC Relays. I am sure that she will also steeple at some point in the summer.

How do we get the Yearian kid out of our ccs rankings? That stuff is depressing.

Independent? doesn't Sonoma Academy have a Track and filed team?

Sonoma Academy does have a track and field team. I don't think it's unusual for someone of her caliber to go to Arcadia, Mt. SAC Relays etc. Lot of other teams go to different meets with their elite athletes.

Jack Yearian Bellarmine Prep Tacoma WA is listed correctly on ca.milesplit.com. I see that he is listed incorrectly on athletic.net. I contacted their webmasters to make the correction.
