Bellarmine is pretty good but six runners on this list might be pushing it a bit....

This list is for the coverage area of the SJ Mercury News which takes out a lot of good teams in the Monterey area and Bellarmine did have the best team in CCS with the most depth so not surprising.

Santa Cruz County isn't in the SJ Mercury News coverage area?
They used to include the SCCAL.
The SCCAL girls would have dominated their list.
Cate Ratliff, Mari Friedman, Marea Zlatunich and Matti Peoples would have been 1st team. Jessica Kain and Abby Meck would have made 2nd team. Annika Niles, Annika Mcbride, Reina Garcia and Lila Roake honorable mention.
Aptos...State Champs, Div 3
Santa Cruz....runner-ups, Div 4

My humble opinion.

The All-CCS teams will be posted shortly. That list will include all leagues in CCS.

This is usually a list of Santa Clara Valley kids. I'm surprised they included so many from north of Palo Alto. I'd be willing to bet there's not much thought put in besides looking at the best Crystal Springs times and interviewing the top runner. Most of the Merc XC articles are written directly from reading results. They usually do a pretty good job. I think this is a situation where we're probably lucky to get the coverage we do. The Merc is good to XC, and I know the Santa Cruz papers give lots of love to their teams. I think the polls voted on by the coaches will be a much more of an in depth reflection of the season.

The coaches that met (which took over 2 hours I might add) to vote on the All-CCS teams and to give input to the Mercury about their All-Mercury News team had no guidelines on how they need to vote. Some looked only at League, Section, State; some looked at the whole season; some at Course Best times; some thinking was "who would you want on your Fantasy XC team" and the list went on. We discussed more athletes then what will show up on these lists giving our "pitch" for why we felt they should be on a list or not (hence the 2+ hours). The Mercury does give XC more exposure then Field Hockey, Water Polo or tennis (they published our XC Rankings every week, when was the last time you saw a H2O Polo ranking published) so yes, they care about our sport and they want the panels input. I believe they do their homework on these athletes in their coverage area (SC County, SM County and the SF schools that are in SF County and compete in the WCAL/WBAL). This is what they have done every year since they switched over to creating their All Mercury News team a few years back. The All-CCS team will cover all of CCS.
