Put Clare Peabody in for Aptos and Kaila Gibson in for SLV and things look very interesting. It looks like both teams picked a fast freshman.

Bellarmine 1 - Carlmont 0

Im calling it now..Carlmont will win CCS again! I doubted it prior to todays race..

Anonymous said...

...SLV''s fast freshman didn't race.

most impressive performance was obviously Bellarmine! Go bells!

Except they didn't win. Go madera South

Anna Maxwell was easily the most impressive performance of the day. Clearly the times were affected by heat... the fact that she ran that incredibly fast shows she is up there as one of the top runners in the country this year.

Wow was anyone surprised by the Monta Vista girls team getting an overall close second? SLV and Aptos have traditionally been so dominant that it's impressive to see a team that isn't Carlmont or Gunn sneak in there.

I'm not surprised at all. They should be good. By the talent they have gotten on the girls side I am surprised they did not win. If anything they are the favorites to win CCS with that kind of talent. I am surprised by the lack of depth in the girls over-all. Monta Vista had the fastest 5th runner with a 20:45. The next fastest was 21:27. That is going to kill you at the state meet.

Yeah, this isn't a fair showing really. The meet was well put on and everything, but you can see kids running significantly faster in the juniors races vs senior races or even sophomore vs junior, but they still wont place as well. ex. 15th in junior boys: Adam Shulze, 16:37 meanwhile 15th in senior boys Abel Aleman: 16:53. When you really think about it, it's super lopsided considering seniors should already have advantages over the juniors. Just goes to show what the heat could really do.

@ 10:10
Part of what you are seeing is that this years senior class is slower than the junior class. Look at the results from last year the 15th junior was 17:02 and the 15th sophomore was 17:06. The races are only an hour apart.

Mv actually did beat slv in the combined girls score (116-160), though not in team time because of maxwells incredible run. Sherman didn't run well, but who is this transfer they're talking about?

HS sports have become free agency. Public schools are worse than privates.

A couple of students moving from school to school as they are allowed to do now is not an epidemic.

It was reported by someone earlier on this site that Kaila Gibson is now attending SLV.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, Kaila ran the open race... And the whole SLV team was cheering her on

@10:55 you have a good point, but i still think that just one hour in the middle of the day could have an impact. The hottest part of the day was recorded between 12-1 at 83 and humidity was in the 80s too. Regardless, the gap was noticeably bigger this year.

What did Gibson run?

Best race was sophomore girls. Junior boys was best.

Where was Steven Sum? Injured?

Monta Vista was not even ranked in the beginning were they? Or not very high?

Albert Caruana said...

I had them ranked #6 overall in my pre-season top 10 lists:

I don't know any of the runners that have transferred, but I do know that if I were a talented runner hoping to be recruited by a Div 1 school I would seek out the best coaching I could find. Some runners may blossom under average coaching, but others may need special attention. The opportunity to be on a championship caliber team may not be the motivation.

Anonymous said...

I think some coaches think WAY too highly of themselves.

Anonymous said...

In reply to 7:29AM, that scenario would be considered an "athletically motivated transfer", and therefore be against CIF policy, regardless of whether the athlete was recruited or not. See CIF bylaw 200.A.(6).

Anonymous said...

If there is an athletic motivated transfer, as clearly this case is and not any different than last year's Goltra at Campolindo, who's going to speak the truth? I mean the Campo kid outright said in the interview here he moved schools to run there... Nothing. Though the kid from De La Salle had to sit out a year. It will be interesting how this unfolds.

As for the team scores, that is great but are you sure those are accurate? Do runners all with the same time receive the same place with that scoring? In a big race there could be multiple runners with the same time.

That junior class of the bells is outrageous. I wish the best of luck for them. Meijer brothers are looking strong. So is A. Sasser, R. Avila, R. Burd, and M. Hasse. Avila and Hasse seemed to run well together based on my view of the first 2/3rds of the race. I haven't seen Hasse's name come up before. Possible dark horse for the bells?

Blair Hurlock transferred to DLS before the new transfer rule came into effect. You had to sit out a year and could only compete in non varsity competitions. Now, you only have to sit out 30 days if you participated in that sport at the previous school.

You can check out the following link which may answer some of your questions in regards to transferring:
http://cifstate.org/images/PDF/frequently_asked_questions.pdf

In regards to reasons for transfer, you can transfer due to sports. You have a one time move during your high school career.

Anonymous said...

Albert, where have you read that students can transfer for sports? This was not stated in the document you linked, and it seems in direct conflict with CIF philosophy and bylaws.

From the current CIF "UNDERSTANDIING CIIF
TRANSFER ELIIGIIBIILIITY
FOR IINTERSCHOLASTIIC ATHLETIICS" document (http://www.cifsf.org/admin/forms/CIFAdministrativeHandbook-TransferEligibility.pdf):

"Q: What is meant by an athletically motivated move or transfer?
A: Based on the CIF philosophy that the “student attend school to receive an education first; athletic participation is secondary” (Bylaw 200.A.(2), individual Section Offices may limit eligibility for a student when there is evidence the transfer, or move is made to acquire athletic participation at “School B.” Such evidence of an athletically motivated move may be, but is not limited to:
• Evidence of parental or student dissatisfaction with a coach or a coaching decision at the former school.
• Evidence the student’s move would result in the assurance the student would gain varsity participation at the new school or result in more playing time.
1• A demonstrated move or transfer that is prompted by association with club programs or outside agencies that use the facilities of the new school.
• A demonstrated move or transfer to a school with which the student has had an athletic association.
• A move or transfer to a school by a student who is associated with outside agencies that use the facilities or personnel at the new school of attendance.
• The preponderance of credible evidence the move was not made in good faith to secure greater educational advantage for the student.

The standard applied to the evidence of “athletic motivation” is that which is associated with a student move or transfer proffered to a hearing officer or Section Commissioner is that which a responsible person acting in a thoughtful manner would judge be with “athletic motivation.”

If I understand the CIF Administrative Handbook concerning "CIF transfer eligibility for interscholastic athletics" a student can transfer for an educational advantage but not for athletic motivation.
So, if a student transfers in order to become a better athlete and thereby enhancing his/her chances of being recruited by a Div 1 school wouldn't the motivation then be for an educational advantage? (Assuming Div 1 schools offer a better education than Div 2 schools.)

in reply to 7:54PM: I am not a coach. I have known MANY coaches and every one of them has thought highly of himself. (never knew a female coach)
I wouldn't want someone coaching my child who didn't think highly of himself.
I believe it takes a person with a lot of self-confidence to be an effective coach.
I agree, Anna Maxwell had the most impressive performance of the day.

Anonymous said...

No, that would still be an athletically motivated transfer and would be in violation of CIF policies. Rather than trying to find loop-holes in the rules coaches should just follow them with integrity.

Why did Goltra get to run then? He admitted he moved schools to run for "Chuck's Army"

@ 8:28pm
I loaded the combined results from Earlybird. Although they are only listed to the second, the combined results (using RunScore) are actually timed to the tenth and then rounded so the chances are very good that the runners are in the correct order (I do not consider athletes with the same time as a tie, even at State they will go to the FinishLynx camera and break the tie so that there are no ties). There might be that rare chance in these combined results that the athletes are tied to the tenth, how RunScore breaks that tie I do not know. So are the scores accurate... as accurate as they can be given the data that is available.

@ 11:38 If you read the interview Goltra said he transferred for both academic and athletic reasons. He also has a twin brother who transferred.
