For how large and good the coaching is the NCS continues to not live up to expectations. Sad how the Central Valley with 10% of the population is so superior.

NCS has dropped off big as of late, no stars and limited depth. Hopefully it's just a cycle and the section bounces back.

Albert, I think you know what I would say about today. Who's the next Michael Tomasi? I think it was pretty clear.

Dangerous teams at state - still Las Lomas girls and Acalanes is looking real good now too. Redwood did come out of nowhere though!

SJND Boys - Those Murphy twins lived up to the hype that some of the commenters on this board have been giving them. Congrats.

Julia Maxwell looked real strong. Great job.

Maria Carrillo looked phenomenal. That said, Alameda was close and Tu fell and Nguyen vomited at some point. So I think the race is closer than some think.

Dillon Read of Miramonte was right there. Wow, what was he out with at DFAL? He picked up right where he left off!

And Arcata girls were monstrous it looks like in DIV.

Congrats on a very fun meet everyone! I am ecstatic!

will there be race videos?

Dillon Read has been being careful with racing because of shin splints.
And whoever is hating on NCS, the course today was dreadfully slow. Look for some great performances when compared to your Central Valley runners at State.

Where did Miramonte come from? what a race...

where did San Rafael come from!?!?!?!

d3 race was crazy- super proud of eugene hamilton for showing everybody he is worthy of the hype. super slow times today because of the disgusting mud, and it just got worse and worse as the day went on. i did NOT expect san rafael to to win d4. i thought for sure drake and piner were going to wreck everyone. frost and morris both upset piner's second guy while the drake duo ran away with it as expected. not sure what happened to connor clark, but great job to sjnd as always.

Albert Caruana said...

No race videos as far as I know.

Dillon Read ran for Miramonte which was a big boost for them and Jimmy McFeely ran great for them (19th at their league meet, 9th today).

San Rafael finished in 2nd behind Redwood at their league final (3 points ahead of Drake). They ran well today and deserved to win.

Aidan Goltra has to be one of the top stories here. Awful race at NCS last year and doesn't qualify for state after being one of the top Freshman the year previous + 2 underwhelming track seasons = him being removed from most of the top runner lists.
Transfers to Campolindo then isn't even seriously in the discussion with Hanson/Huxham/Stalters going into NCS.
Goes on to win his race and post top time across all divisions by 15+ seconds.
These stories are why I follow this sport.

yo first commenter gtfo dont talk about stuff u dont know about. we got hella stars. and it was unbelievably rainy and muddy today so OF COURSE the times are going to be super slow.

I deleted the previous post. Just not appropriate in my mind.

Completely agree, thanks Albert.

Revised: Aidan Goltra wasn't very nice when he left his former school at which he was a captain, and went to campo. Not very cool.

To the poster above: If you liked it then you should have put a ring on it.

To the poster above: Your logics fail me.

Aidan Goltra and his twin brother transferred to Campo for classes and programs not offered at Las Lomas. Period. His former team mates are still his friends.

Anonymous said...

what's the story on Goltra's move from Las Lomas to Campolindo? I'm curious. Yeah NCS doesn't always win the state meet, but its hard to compete with all of those SS powerhouses. NCS runners are legit, but SS just has way more competition at a higher level. But I was talking with someone, and they said that in terms of who does better in college, it's usually SJS teams, and NCS teams who do the best, and SS are usually not that great when it comes to college.

I'm glad to see Miramonte win, even though Tyler Hanson didn't get the win today. Again, I don't know the story with Goltra, but he ran a great race today, and looked really strong. I was a little disappointed with the way Campo ran, but it was horrible conditions. O'dowd ran great with Hamilton running phenomenal. Disappointed with Melendez, but he'll get an opportunity to run faster at State. Huxham showed that the 15:14 at Mt. SAC wasn't a flash in the pan.

I was shocked to see Tariku Abdo run away to the DI title, didn't Matt Schumann run 14:58 at the EBAL Champs? Abdo's PR was only 15:58 leading into this race, and he ran 15:47. Was expecting more competition for the invid title, but teamwise, SRV and DLS ran great races.

What happened to Arias-Sheridan? Rodrigues has been coming into his own, but Arias ran 15:16 and won by a landslide last year. SJND ran a great race, congrats to the Murphys for running great races.

D2 Boys was shocking, was Holden sick? Even in these conditions, I thought he was the best runner in NCS thus far. Maria Carillo ran a great race, and had a great pack. Anderson has really run some great times this season, and i can't wait to see him next year. Same with the Casa Grande Freshman. Alameda put up a good fight, and if Cameron Tu hadn't fallen, and Nguyen hadn't vomited, then things might've been different. But thats part of the reason why they run the race.

Lawson and Hutchins ran great, and Piner didn't put much of a fight. Congrats to San Rafael for winning, maybe they can get another state title.

Alright, I'll elaborate (albeit with bits of speculation). Goltra probably wanted to improve, to go somewhere that he could contend for a championship. He likely didn't feel he was getting enough of that at LL, so he left. Plain and simple.

He's a 16 year old kid, he doesn't owe you anything. He's a knowledgeable runner and likely helped your team get better, but there's no moral obligation for him to stay. If having a championship caliber runner were so important to you, then Schreiber should have gotten the rest of the team to step up. Goltra did what he had to do and I don't blame him for it one bit.

Anonymous said...

^^^FYI, I was the comment with the Beyonce reference.

Anonymous said...

I'm a LL student and confirm what comment at 6:32 said. The Goltra brothers transferred for academic reasons and many of us are still great friends with them. All the other comments are just speculation or needless provoking.

Albert Caruana said...

Heard Arias fell a couple of times but I think the best runner won the race.

As for Aidan Goltra, he is allowed to transfer per the new state by-laws, he sat out the required amount of time and is eligible to compete for Campolindo. He ran a great race today and I am not quite sure why people have to bring up why he transferred. It's well within his right to do so.

Anonymous said...

Have you heard of a little town called Clovis? That city is better than all of NCS combined. Sorry all... You know I'm right. Stats will prove it next weekend.

Anonymous said...

i'm a LL student too, and I was there when he told schieber he was leaving. He said it was for an ap class but everyone knew it was for a better coach. I do agree though that he is still friends with most of us.

Anonymous said...

The kid transferred to be on a winning team lets call it what it is. He sat out per the rules and end of story.

Shame parents allowed this tho. Silly to think one AP class would make a difference. Unlikely but the truth is running faster will.

Anonymous said...

Arias fell 3 times in the first mile because of the terrible conditions. Look for him to bounce back at state. SJND put it down today though. as did the rest of the division winning teams! Any team that can come out and gut out a win in conditions like today deserve to be crowned the best in the section.

Which team had themost dominant showing today? How about the most suprising individuals?

The Murphy twins from SJND in d5 showed they are for real today, some of the best under classmen in NCS no doubt.

Anonymous said...

Really disappointed with Odowd today, they could have won. I guess they made it too state though, so they didn't choke.

Anonymous said...

Just curios, how is it ok for Goltra to transfer to a school in a different district?

Anonymous said...

What do curios have to do with it?

Anonymous said...

Goltra transferred from Las Lomas to Campolindo, both in the Acalanes Unified District.

Anonymous said...

Hey, instead of talking about Goltra, why not about Campo, and how they were almost bumped from the #4 spot by Redwood. Pretty interesting considering they were the supposed favorites coming into the race. Also, major props to both Miramonte and Acalanes, both those teams had some runners who really stepped up today.

Anonymous said...

of course people are gonna talk about Goltra - he was the fastest runner of the meet. But yes, there are plenty of other stories to discuss

Anonymous said...

Aidan is my friend and i may not necessarily agree with his decision to leave Las Lomas, however he is a very determined runner and i know that he will continue to have an excellent running career. people should just leave this transfer crap alone because what's done is done. i hope that you are happy at campo aidan. i miss having you my team. :(

Anonymous said...

Everyone should just drop the whole Goltra thing. Who cares if he transferred? If he wasn't some stud who ran 15:30 in today's conditions no one would even care if he transferred. He ran a great race today and lets just leave it at that.
I think the overall D3 race was more interesting than just Goltra anyway. The "favorites" ended up barely making it to state and some other teams stepped up and ran really well in tough conditions to place better than excepted. It shows you why rankings dont matter.
Looking on to state, I think St. Joes in D5 is really the only team that has a legit shot at a state title. If Gabe Arias can refind himself there chances go way up and they'd even be the favorites. They had a good team time today compared to most of the other teams. Also University won't be there, first time in a long time they won't be there, if you take out the year they got moved up to d4.
At State individually look for Lawson and Maxwell should be big favorites, and deservedly so.

The reason people are talking about the transfer issue is somewhere deep down we know it is not right. The same we feel (even though its none of our business) when LeBron ditched Clevland or the 50 year old man ditches his wife for a young beauty. We hold loyalty in high regard yet in sports players are chasing money and championsips, now so are our kids. The community of our neighborhoods have degraded. I would never have competed for our town rival or transferred even if it meant losing. But things are different now, in my opinion for the worse. My blame here always goes to the parent. Yes, they want what is best for their child but is it what is best in the end? Is the lesson of honor, loyalty and self motivation worth a few seconds in the mile? Is one AP class going to radically change your life? I don't know but i do know chasing championship teams (Yankees, Lakers, etc) doesn't always work out.

...Louis Rodrigues?

mud puddles said...

the D5 and D1 races was the driest of the day. they were before the epic downpour. thats why trevor louis tariku etc had such good times compared to everyone else.

Anonymous said...

The d1 race, especially the girls, was a total down poor so you have no idea what your taking about. Even the lead rubbings of that race, who were ahead of the pack by a bit were slippinfb and slidding all over. The course sucked for everyone but d1 girls had it the worst with poring rain and a mudslide to run on

@9:41, really? I mean come on, don't now include his parents in this already unnecessary conversation. And on a side note, Lebron had every right to leave Cleveland, they couldn't get a championship with him, and the city showed how unclassy their fans were after he left. Now luckily Las Lomas has shown a great amount of class post-Goltra, and hasn't burned his jerseys, but he has every right to transfer, and he's held up a lot of honor and dignity amongst the crap that everyone is giving him right now.

ayyyyyyy howbout that john lawson kid is he gonna be able to beat daniel de la torre?

Albert Caruana said...

Should be a great match up at State. Lawson is the defending champion so the question is can De La Torre beat Lawson?

@ 12:08

Yes he had every right and played within the rules. But my point was something about it doesn't sit right with some people, thus the conversation (which Sports ethics is a valid topic here). No one is arguing about someone's right or about rules (though did his new coach ever talk to him before the transfer? hmmm...). My point is there is no loyalty in sport anymore and it goes from the top all the way to club sports where you pay to be on the best team. But what do you expect HSers and parents to do who have drunk the cool aid. Chucks Army was the hot school, now not so much? Will kids transfer now too?

Anonymous said...

Still no talk of biggest suprise team? most suprising individual? etc.

Someone mentioned Louis Rodriguez of SJND Div V, and I'd like to expand on that. He's a great miler but was "below the radar" last XC season. Now he's showing what he can do and hasn't gotten the attention you might expect, given a strong second in Div V on Saturday. I predict he's going to do great at State.

Gabe Arias did have a bad day; I believe he's had the really nasty cold that's been going around and that would slow anyone down. When he's up he's REALLY up so I'm not worried about State! Go Pilots!

mud everywhere said...

Albert can you expand on what you think about the condition of the course through out the day? I've gotten mixed results from the people I've asked. I do know that conditions for the d5 and d1 races were as terrible as I had seen the entire day. With a lot of this talk about the times being so incredibly different and 40+ second conversions it would mean Goltra might have been near times people like Luis Luna and Joyce were running, which I find very hard to believe. Conditions were equally as dismal all day if you ask me.

WHAT THE HOLY HELL HAPPENED TO CONNOR CLARK

southerner said...

for torre vs lawson rivalry:
not that they matter at this point, but in case anyone's interested here are
last year's 3200/1600/woodward PR's:

de la torre:
9:05, 4:10, 15:40
lawson:
9:12, 4:18, 15:20

both have been phenomenal this season. its going to be clash of the titans at state

Anonymous said...

^^ i too am wondering how connor clark got beat by 3 guys who he usually destroys

Anonymous said...

Reinhart has had a bit of ownage over Clark this year if I'm correct. I think Clark just got beat being honest. Although I don't think many people think that He's 4th best in NCS d5.

SJND!!! Go Pilots!! They did amaaazzzzzing!!!

Dear mud everywhere, It didn't rain (well maybe some drizzle) during the first 3 races D1 boys, D5 boys and D5 girls. The course was very wet and muddy because it did rain a lot earlier in the morning. Around 10 am during the girls D1 race it started to pour on and off and there was some wind because we had to steady one of the easy-ups at the finish. I think the rain stopped around 11:30 but it caused more slippage and mud. The dirt track became a swamp, part of the blacktop was under water. The course was definitely beaten up by the time the later races (D3 boys, D2 girls). I worked the finish line and noticed an increase of mud and sometimes blood after the girls D1 race. If you think about it though, this is what cross country is like for the Northwest, Midwest, and other parts of the country!

Great footage of the D3 races are on the Campolindo website. Just click on the link for results, videos , photos at the bottom of the first article. Of course the video is for the Campo athletes but you do get to see the crazy rain and mud!

I think the SJND girls team put lots of effort in the race. 7th place is the best they've ever done as a school (missed state by 1 team)!! congrats to the guys and kim and veronica though. Go pilots!

Nils said...

Second Anonymous at 9:20 pm. The SJND girls are getting more depth. Kim is a senior but Veronica is a sophomore and will be around for 2 more years, and the rest of the team is getting seasoned and faster.
