Are those on scholarship for running or intellect or both?

Anonymous said...

Dang! Very impressive list.

Albert Caruana said...

I believe those are verbal commitments after being accepted by respective Universities.

i've heard kieran gallagher to Harvard as well

Is Sturges getting any $$$ from Duke or just entry? They don't give much until worth proven after a few seasons.

Some of the College Mentioned,The Athletes are not aloud to talk about Scholarships due to other athletes on there respective Team they Chose and that is also the same for others!

in the know said...

I don't think any of the athletes on that list are getting any scholarship money from their respective colleges.

also in the know said...

Verdon is, the others are not.

"In the know" and "also in the know" are NOT providing correct information.

Ivy Leagues don't give scholarships

Anonymous said...

Stanford and Duke are not Ivies and they both give athletic scholarships to runners.

Albert Caruana said...

The intention of this post was to start a list of local athletes and their college choices. Let's focus there.

Thank you.

also in the know said...

Yes, but Verdon is the only runner good enough on that list to get scholarship money from her respective school.

Once again, "also in the know" is NOT providing correct information.

I would say Sturges, a finalist at the California State Meet with a PR BETTER than Verdon is also worth a scholarship to 95% of colleges in America, especially Duke.

J Walters said...

Yea and I'm sure we can trust "Anonymous" so much more as a "credible" source.

Verdon is definitely the best on that list and it's not surprising she's getting money. Waschura/Sturges might get a little bit of money but Stanford/Duke don't give out much scholarship money in general unless the runner is a very high caliber performer.

Banjo said...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't a 4:08 for a boy and a 4:47 for a girl be considered "high caliber"?

Regardless of this pointless debate about scholarships, this is a great list of schools so like Albert said, we need to stay on subject and congratulate all these athletes for their achievements.

I look forward to hearing more about the class of 2012 and their college destinations.

..problem verbals are just that. Unless they signed a LOI then athletes can and have known to change their minds. Were those signed during the early signing period (Early Nov)?

Anonymous said...

There is no early signing period for track/xc anymore. The official LOI signing period begins in February.

I would assume that the Stanford and Ivy commitments are for athletes who were accepted during the early action/early decision period.

Banjo said...

Keep in mind that the title of this thread is "NorCal athletes and their college destination", so this is not necessarily a list of everyone who's verbally committing to a school or signing an LOI.

Just a heads up for any question about these Ivy League people. They do not give out athletic scholarships and prefer their athletes to apply early. After a verbal commitment, they are sent "likely letters" from the admissions department if their grades are up to the Ivy League level. Then they are admitted. So at most, it can be a verbal commitment form Ivy Leagues despite being heavily recruited.

4:08/4:47, while great times, are not all that high caliber at the respective schools in question.

Anonymous said...

Keep in mind that those times were run by juniors in high school, not by runners already in college. If you do some research you will see that those are VERY recruitable mid-distance times by those (and most) colleges.

Percentage of scholarship aid is not determined by a time standard but what school you are attending and where they are in their depth chart.

As a coach who has had many runners continue on to run on scholarship at the NCAA Division 1 level every one of these marks are more than worthy of full financial assistance. 4:08 and 4:47 are amazing times, some of the best in the nation and very deserving of athletic aid.

Yes, Ivy leagues do not offer athletic scholarships as already stated but they do try to give athletes aid in other forms such as academics, etc.

These athletes are choosing the best academic and athletic institutions in America. Personally I am amazed at the accomplishments of these young men and women not only on the track but in the classroom.

To some a full ride is what is important to another it may be graduating from an Ivy League School. Rather then debating who is getting what, or what is "better" lets celebrate the amazing accomplishments of these student-athletes. Not only are they getting into some of the most prestigious academic institutions in America but also with an opportunity to continue running at the highest level for at least another 4 years!

VERY well said Coach Small! Thanks.

Chris is the 5th fastest returner in the nation over 15/16/mile. Allison is the 12th returner. Verdon is top 20 as well. I'm the 9th national returner for 3200/2mile. If none of those are worth money to a college, then I don't know what is.
Additionally, the scholarship (or lack of one) has no physical meaning to us. It doesn't affect our ability to run fast. We run for the love of running, not for some stupid check. Going to such a high level university as all of us are, and running on teams that have competed and won in Pac-12 or Big 12 or the Ivy League, is the highest calling imaginable. If you think we need money or incentives to run fast, then you can pretty much consider yourself ignorant of what we go through and what we represent. Rather than presume to know about our personal matters and hide behind fake internet names, I encourage you to talk to us directly before posting completely untrue information on respectable, well-meaning blog sites. Better yet, run the times yourself! Then talk. Actions speak louder than words.
Thank you to Mr. Caruana and Coach Small (see you out there at Quicksilver soon, I'm sure!) for being courteous and sane and understanding that at the end of the day, we are 17-18 year old kids trying to make decisions that will affect ourselves and our families for the rest of our lives. I can't speak for my 2012 classmates, but I myself have felt frequently too small and inexperienced for the scope of the decision I'm making. I can only hope to be deserving of the honor and the privilege bestowed upon me by the great university and running program that will shape my life.
Thanks,
-Kevin Bishop

M Newman said...

wow dude no one even mentioned you and you have to come on here and act all defensive, lol.

Anonymous said...

Agreed with M Newman, someone's feeling a little left out that no one is talking about them...

Kevin said...

I definitely didn't have the greatest XC season ever, so I don't think people should be talking about me. I'm not concerned with that. What does concern me is that people would insult my future teammates on what is probably the greatest accomplishment of their lives. Maybe you don't think I deserve a scholarship, you're entitled to your opinion. But 4:08 and 4:47 are straight up fast. At least respect their times, if not mine.

Last I checked, Colorado has been performing better than Stanford.
