T&FN Special: AR 2-Mile For Lagat (update)

I posted the link (courtesy of Track and Field News) to Bernard Lagat's splits on my twitter account which you can find to the right of this page.  If you haven't seen them already, here are Lagat's splits for his 8:10.07 American record effort this past Saturday.  I would venture to guess that most record attempts look very similar to the splits below, such as Jim Ryun's 3:55.3 mile in HS, where he reportedly split 60, 60, 60 and 55.  For those of you that run as fast as you can from the gun, you might want to reconsider and check out how the professionals, such as Lagat and Chris Solinsky, pace their race efforts.

Bernard Lagat's 220s in his record 2M:

I'm not so good at math but that is a 4:07 last 1600 for the 10k...not too shabby.

Note his first mile was 4:26. Take note high schoolers!

Chris Solinsky is a man.

I think the "take note" was on the fact is last mile was faster than his first.

or maybe you meant he is "THE man?" Which is true...

however u should note a key thing here....

running fast for time, hence "time trial" and racing to win is 2 totally different scenarios....

It is true that there is a difference between going for a certain time and racing. However, racing to win still involves pacing yourself well early so you can actually race toward the end of the race.

So basically my boy C-Sol (nickname research in progress), nailed both of those things. BOOM HEADSHOT!

I agree. That is why Arcadia is very fast for times, and Section and State are slower... different races, different strategies.

Race early to get the time, work your kick at the end of the season for the win!

I think intelligent pacing has been the reason for the success of Julie Nacouzi during the post season cross country races. While the majority of the girls raced out to way-too-fast first miles, Nacouzi stayed on pace and picked off many of the faster starters and record some impressive finishes.
