Feel free to comment on the above rankings. There are many teams and individuals that are very close and on any given race can beat teams or individuals that may be ranked above them. At the very least, I am trying to get all the teams and individuals that belong on the above list. If you think I may have left a team or individual off the list, by all means, please let me know. Please continue to critique the rankings and your comments are always welcome.

Davis deserves #1 , Petaluma 2 then maybe Campo. It is generally agreed by all observers that the seeded race was 25-30 seconds a guy slower than the 9:50 start of the D-3 race. If you take that into consideration Davis would have dominated D-1 and Petaluma would have dominated D-3. Campo would only have 2-3 in the Davis and Petaluma top 5.Here is the time range first 5.

Davis 15:20-16:25
Petaluma 15:50-16:15
Campo 15:40- 16:46

30 seconds is toltally pushing it. Thats like saying Nate Beach from acalanes ran 9:00 converted in the 2 mile at NCS tri-valley in the spring because it was 100 degrees. There was a 10 degree differnce between D3 and the seeded race. 3 seconds a degree is a little steep. But I don't think Campo should be first. Remeber davis #2 runner didnt finish either.

on the individual rankings i think that without a doubt Litwiller should be on the top 10 maybe even 5...

Anonymous said...

On the Girls's individual list you should mention Alycia Cridebring. She did well at Stanford and Nike.

Anonymous said...

Garett Rowe should be listed. He beat #5 Sterling Lockert by 18 seconds in the same race and ran the same time as #7 McQuitty two hours later in 10 degrees more heat. His teammate Myjer was only 3 sec behind Rowe and should also be listed.

whoever thinks there was only a 10 sec difference between morning races and D1 and seed races based on heat probably never ran.

Albert Caruana said...

Looking at only the Stanford race, Davis would deserve to be #1 but I am trying to take the whole season into account. The top 4 boys' teams listed seem to be in a class by themselves above the rest of the teams in Northern California.

Yes, the Mt. View boys you mentioned as well as Parker Schuh are definitely on the radar. A talented trio of runners for that squad.

Same goes for Alycia Cridebring.

Keep the comments coming.

It was 76 for the DIII race and 87 for the seeded race. It was 20 seconds diffrence per runner at the most. It should be Davis then Petaluma then Campolindo. Robert Pulford should be number 8 Erik Olson should be number 9 and Sterling Lockert should be number 10. Litwiler should be at least top 5. Same with Steven Inglehart. Austin Synder should at least be in the honorable mention.

Anonymous said...

yea, team wise move campo a little lower...if they ran the seeded race they wouldn't have gotten that great a time. and i dont think robert puford should be ranked 10 individually either. proly on the bubble. replace with litwiller or roderick.

Anonymous said...

if the rankings are going by stanford which they seem to be. if you have the time conversions which no one will agree on then it should be a little different for guys individual.

1 Seawell
2 Peterson
3 Landrumn
4 Litwiller
5 Lema
6 Iglehart
7 Haworth
8 Lockert
9 MacQuitty
10 Johnson

but its just opinion. whoever shows up at fresno will be number one

maybe due to the talent this year, change it to top 15?

Anonymous said...

Albert could you provide some commentary with yor rankings? Some of your individual picks are perplexing as well as some boys you leave out.

Anonymous said...

i'm putting my money on roderick cracking some top 10 records at NCS

"i'm putting my money on roderick cracking some top 10 records at NCS"

...Oh come on, this is not the place to make LOL's

Anonymous said...

Nano and Hood on honorable mention is ridiculous. Nano is top 10. Hood, top 4

Landrum is 1
Seawell is 2

Albert Caruana said...

Anybody know why Hood didn't run at Stanford and Cerney ran JV?

As far as my picks, I try to put the runners and teams in order based on history, races so far this season and potential success in their section and state.

I am not going to claim to be the know all when it comes to ranking which is why I ask for help from the visitors to this blog. If you feel like a team or individual should be considered or moved higher, give their credentials and I will consider them in the next rankings.

I have to say that the Stanford Invitational made it very difficult to rank teams and individuals this year due to the weather. I don't think you can use a blanket formula based solely on the temperature of each race as some runners do run well in the heat.

Anonymous said...

Iglehart is more than just on the bubble. Same with Littwiller, the kid was 9:11 (i think) last year. Both should be in the top 5.

Anonymous said...

people. LEAVE YOUR NAME!! come on. also, it's one race. ONE. completely changing the entire ranking based on ONE race is...silly. Things change week to week. teams train differently. I know we trained right through it. I can say that this is going to be an insane year for NCS.

Unknown said...

Sterling i completely agree. you cannot base rankings solely on one race alone. But i do think that litweiller should be on the top 10 because he has had two great consecutive races. With a win at De La Salle and strong 2nd at Stanford. Showing me at least that he is legit. on another note, I personally do not care for rankings. it is all about how you race at the end of the season. Not how high you are ranked going into NCS or state but how high you finish. You could be ranked 1st in the nation going in for all i care but if you get beat at state or nationals you obviously are not the fastest at the end of the season.

Anonymous said...

Stanford was just one race. But it's the first and only showdown of the season thus far for the NorCal teams and just about everyone was there. If another individual or team beat you, they should be ranked ahead of you, especially if it was head to head. Allowances for heat should be made from the morning to the afternoon but that's a judgment call. Right now these ranking appear overly subjective which is sad because many teams and individuals take them seriously.

Anonymous said...

If you take rankings serious then you have a problem. Do you think barstow takes rankings seriously? Lol. All they do is kick people's butts at the end of the season. They don't race in big meets during the regular season for a reason- they want to win at the end.

Anonymous said...

So mr. anonymous who doesn't write his name that said that if someone gets beat they should move down. People have bad days. i completely agree with Erik tho. Rankings don't even matter. BUT i'm going to sorta contradict myself here. kids don't peak for stanford. mainly because they're busy focusing on the big picture, like winning when it matters such as state and NCS like Erik said.

Anonymous said...

How can you possibly rank diana george above nicole hood? I dont think diana has ever beaten nicole. ever.

Anonymous said...

Sterling.
Why do you, and your team consistently post on dyestat, cross country express, etc if the rankings don't mean anything? If they don't matter, don't post. If you post, then you obviously think they matter. Maybe people should keep lower profiles on message boards and focus on training more.

Oh yeah, Congrats for the assistant coach Oregon call.

Anonymous said...

haha. my anonymous,

thanks. and because it's here. just because we look and post some where doesn't mean we're thinking these are the end all be all of our season. i certainly won't settle for second in the NCS. nor 8th as an individual. I guess it keeps me motivated. knowing what the expectations are, then i know my expectations need to be higher. oh, and most of my team doesn't post on dyestat. Me and bjorn were pretty much to only ones that do it regularly. we post here because we know about running. it's what we do. we read these because it helps us know who the kids to beat are. think of it as contributing to the sport.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Sterling and Eric. You should not really care that much about rankings none of them matter when it comes to sections and state. The best teams to perform on those days are the ones who will get what they deserve. And just because someone posts on different sights does not mean that they care about rankings. I am not sure were you came up with that.

Anonymous said...

for the girls rankings, I believe that you could have added Allie Mayer as at least being close to the the top 10. She ran a 10:55 2 mile last track season and a solid 1st place effort of 14:53 at the Ram Invitational.

Anonymous said...

i think we all should argue more.

Albert Caruana said...

I appreciate all the comments and will keep them in mind when I post my next set of rankings.

Thank you all!

Mike Roderick thinks that Mike Roderick is overadded. Thats what Mike Roderick thinks.

Would everyone kill me if I said, does an increase in temperature necessarily mean an increase in race time for EVERY runner? I think it's very possible some athletes perform better in a little bit of heat. Just a thought.

-Coach J (El Camino)

Anonymous said...

Coach J,

Of course every rule has an exception. I think that overall the pattern is that kids tend to run slower in hotter weather. Probably not EVERY runner. I'm willing to bet that those runners who run well in heat, would runner better if it was cooler. but, any given day things can happen.

Anonymous said...

Coach J - From everything I have read, vVO2 max (the speed at which you can process your maximum volume of oxygen) is the biggest limiting factor in running. The second biggest factor is your ability to cool yourself. I think it is nearly impossible for a runner to run faster in heat than in good cool conditions. Sprinters often perform better in the heat, because it is easier for their body to completely warm up, but I would say that at any distance above 1600m, heat will always slow a runner down, it is only to what degree that will vary between individual runners.

Anonymous said...

in response to anonymous: i disagree, you are incorrect.

Anonymous said...

lol. that last post wasn't me. but it was funny.

Anonymous said...

It seems Petaluma is always on the blogs. This could explain the results of the poll "What is the Best Boys XC Team in Northern California".

Anonymous said...

haha. ya. it could. except like i said before. we aren't on that much. i'm the only one that check regularly, next to probably our coach. and as for those results. i didn't even vote. but you're right, the only reason we'd get any votes is cause of our own team. i can't think of anyone who would waste a vote. lots of jokers i guess.

Anonymous said...

I love that Mike Roderick is probably the quietest (s/p?) and most humble kid I've ever met, and there's like 3 comments about him on here.

Oh well.

Anonymous said...

since 2007 ncs xc, i have been, and continue to be, very impressed by litwiller's performances. he deserves top 10 (top 5?)

Anonymous said...

To the person who mentioned Allie Mayer ran 10;55 last season, she actually ran 10:59.98

just saying...

And yea, I don't understand why Diana George is ranked higher than Nicole Hood.

Good job on the rankings for the most part though, seem pretty accurate.

Albert Caruana said...

Nicole Hood is on the bubble because she did not run at Stanford and with her injury this past track season, I wanted to wait for her next race before I place her again in the top 10.

Anonymous said...

Mike Roderick thinks that Mike Roderick should nto be in the top 10. Thats what Mike Roderick thinks.

Anonymous said...

It's time to rank the St. Francis boys. They ran faster at the Artichoke Invite yesterday than they did last year, and last year they were CCS Div II champions.

Anonymous said...

i think mike roderick is trying to stay low key so mike roderick can surprise us at the end of the season. mike roderick's an amazing stud. this is just what his teammate thinks

top three guys: petaluma>davis>campo
top three girls: mt. view>aptos>davis

i love how most of the discussions are on the disordered guys rankings

Anonymous said...

St. Francis being ranked? Aren't they like third in their league?

Anonymous said...

I think there is way to much said about only one race. You should be looking at the overall season rather than just idealizing one race where some kids bonked and some kids ran the races of their lives. Yeah there was a degree fluctuation in the races and yes Davis clearly was the better team at Stanford. I am just saying you cant determine rankings off of one single performance.

Anonymous said...

Guys, seriously stop messing around with my name. It's just immature. I think that we should just forget about these stupid rankings and let our legs do the talking.Good luck to everyone, stay healthy too. It'd be a shame if something happened to a team right now, just in the heat of the season.

I actually think St. Francis could make honorable mention later on this year. Their insane summer running seemed to kill Foster and Reis (Correct me if I'm wrong). But they seem to be making a recovery. It is sad to see how the Carlmont boys have almost fallen apart, but they also seem to be coming back with a vengeance with a group of Sophomores and Frosh that few schools can rival. In fact quite a few schools look like they are going to have a fantastic couple of years in the future. Carlmont, Bellarmine, and of course Mountain View. If your school has a promising batch of young runners let's hear about them. Who are the top Frosh this year?

(My lovely heart shaped silver locket, it’s not my fault that my older brother named me when he was 5 and obsessed with the Transformers... but seriously, hope you have a great year Sterling.)
